What do toddlers need in their bedrooms?

 

I’ve been planning on decorating Leah’s bedroom since we moved in two months ago.  She’s 2-3/4 years old right now and we just moved her into a big girl bed.  So in my quest to set up the perfect bedroom for her, I compiled a list of essential things every toddler needs in their bedroom.  Photo: Kiki’s List

So what do toddlers need in their bedrooms?  Whether you plan to rearrange your child’s nursery, or start from scratch for a new bedroom design, there are some basic needs:

 

 

Somewhere to sleep – a crib, a toddler bed, a single bed, a bunk bed (not recommended), a day bed or a double bed or larger. You’ll need to judge whether your toddler can sleep in the bed without falling out or if he’ll need rails of some kind to hold him in.  Or set up some pillows on the floor beside the bed the first few nights depending on your parenting style… I have a friend that said their kids only fell out of bed once or twice the first couple nights and it made them learn REALLY fast to live without rails!  Photo: Pottery Barn Kids

Storage for clothes – If your toddler is anything like mine, she has tons of clothes. I find dresser drawers the most convenient since I don’t have the patience to hang all of her laundry up in the closet. I much prefer to just fold, sort, and throw it in the drawers. (For us, the closet is pretty much for all the pretty dresses she barely wears.)   Photo: Unknown – please let me know if you know where this is from.

 

Storage for books – Again, if your toddler is anything like mine he’ll have boat loads of books.  A box, bin, and/or shelves will help with the organization.  Keep in mind they should be at a level that the toddler can reach so there is no motivation to climb the furniture.  Photo: Living with Punks

 

 

Storage for toys – Toys, toys, toys, toys! Who would have thought there could be so many toys? Have fun with toy storage. This is where you’ll really have to be creative, because let’s face it, most toys aren’t a decorator’s dream!  You can use baskets, fabric bins, shelves, or hide them in the closet etc.  Again, place toys so that they won’t cause any climbing hazards.  Photo: Design Dazzle

 

Play space – It would be nice to have floor space to set up your toddler’s favourite large toys – a doll house, train set, or even just some space for stuffed animals to have a tea party.  Tons of space in your toddler’s bedroom is a luxury, but really not necessary.  Toddlers are small creatures and most actually enjoy tiny spaces and know how to be creative in the smallest of nooks.  So fear not, because whatever space you have is probably plenty for them!  Photo: Jen loves Kev
