Potluck Ideas – Plan a gourmet menu so you have a cohesive meal!

Do you know what the key is to throwing a successful potluck? Plan the menu!  This is so important, and I’m not sure why more people don’t do this!  You know how I’ve been talking about the work lunch we had the other week?  It was amazing.   Instead of the traditional mish-mash of everything under the sun, we (*cough* okay, mostly me) put together a gourmet menu where 8 of us brought food to feed our office of about 20 people.

Tips for planning a gourmet lunch menu

When putting together a menu, you’ll need:

  • 2 drinks, one alcoholic (if that’s okay where you work) and one non-alcoholic,

  • 3 appetizers

  • 3 or 4 dishes for the entree

  • 1 or 2 desserts

I browsed Pinterest (and of course talked to my mom!) to put together the menu.  Then I put together a basic overview of the menu to send to my coworkers so we could divvy up the food.  Eventually I sent them something that looks like the list below, except with full recipes, so they knew exactly what they had to make.

And since this had to be for work, all of these recipes could be made with a toaster oven, a crock pot and a portable grille!

Here’s our menu!  Keep in mind that mostly I used the photos below for inspiration.  Each photo links to the original source, but I didn’t always follow their recipes.

If you are looking for potluck ideas, then planning is so important. As an alternative to a potlluck at work or anywhere really, this was fabulous! It was a delicious gourmet meal that we never would have had without some (okay a LOT of) extra planning!
