It’s really snowy right now where I live. I know, I live in Canada, so I shouldn’t get to complain. It’s kind of to be expected, right? But yesterday, we got about a foot and a half of snow, and call me crazy, but that seems like a lot of snow for one day!
Buses were cancelled. The roads were terrible. And our house felt drafty all day long. And now they’re calling for crazy low temperatures for the next few days. Brrrrr…
Does anyone else find it frustrating that even though buses are cancelled, we adults are still expected to brave the treacherous roads to go to work? No? Just me? I love the snow, but I certainly don’t like driving in it. Yuck! I think grown ups should get snow days too. Wouldn’t that be amazing?
Since we are in this deep freeze (at least where I live), I can’t help but think about winter crafts. I’m sure some cities are waiting for the cherry blossoms to come out, but certainly not where I live. We whipped up these adorable little egg carton penguins to “celebrate” winter after we shovelled the driveway and drank some hot cocoa. I may have been shivering, but it was a fun day for the kids!
Egg Carton Penguins
These egg carton are really easy to make, and you can switch out the materials for what you have on hand. I got the idea from a super cute post over at Kiwi Crate.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Egg Carton
- Black Paint
- White and Orange Paper
- Googly Eyes
- Glue
Trim the “cups” out of the egg carton. Then cut out a beak and feet from orange paper and a belly from white paper like in the photo below:
If it’s a craft that involves painting something, my 3 year old and 5 year old are all over it! Eventually they strayed a bit and started painting the paper black as well. And then my 5 year old started finger painting with the black paint. Eek! I wasn’t prepared for that mess! But it’s nothing a little bit (actually a lot…) of soap couldn’t fix.
Once you’ve painted the egg carton cups, let them dry completely. It took a few hours with the type of paint we used.
Glue the white belly onto the little bump that juts out of the egg carton. The shape makes a perfect belly, so if you have white paint, or even white out, go ahead and paint that little bump instead of using paper.
Glue on the beak.
Glue on the eyes.
Fold the feet and then glue them to the inside of the egg carton cup.
And you’re done!
Here’s what mine looked like:
And here are the ones the kids made. Pretty darn cute, I think! I love that they are each just a little bit different.
Brrrrr… they make me cold just looking at them! (… or maybe that’s the draft in the house again?)
This is a great little craft if you need an activity to keep the kids busy on a snow day.
Or even just on a day when the kids have been cooped up too long and you need to entertain them so they’ll stop following you around the house all day complaining that they’re bored. Does that happen to you as often as it happens to me?
These egg carton penguins are such a fun winter craft to make with the kids! And don’t they look adorable?! What a great activity for a snow day!
