Easy Pipe Cleaner Poinsettia Ornaments

Welcome to Day 3 of our Pipe Cleaner Christmas Ornaments series! Today I’m going to show you how to make pipe cleaner poinsettia ornaments. This simple little craft only needs 3 pipe cleaners and you can make it in less than 5 minutes!

Every day this week I’m going to be sharing a super simple tutorial along with a quick little video to show you how to make 6 different pipe cleaner Christmas ornaments with nothing but a few pipe cleaners! You don’t need any fancy supplies. You don’t even need glue. Just a few bends and twists and you can make some really cool Christmas shapes!

There’s nothing worse than having to clean up a million craft supplies, so with this craft, I’ve got you covered. Grab your pipe cleaners and a pair of scissors. (And maybe some string if you want to hang them on the tree) and that’s all you’ll need. You know I love low mess crafts for kids!

These easy pipe cleaner poinsettia ornaments are SO PRETTY! With a few twists you can make this fun little Christmas craft for kids in less than 5 minutes!

These pipe cleaner poinsettias remind me of the pipe cleaner flower rings we made back in the summer – another super fun pipe cleaner series where we made really fun rings using nothing but pipe cleaners!

Can you tell I like pipe cleaner crafts? When I’m making crafts with my kids I absolutely LOVE IT when I only have to pull out one craft supply. I find it so much easier when I only have to grab one thing — and most importantly — then I only have to put one thing away when we’re done! Easy peasy!

How to make Pipe Cleaner Poinsettia Ornaments:

The full printable instructions are at the end of this post. Here’s a list of affiliate links to products on Amazon that are similar to the supplies we used:

To start, you’ll need two 12 inch red sparkly pipe cleaners. If you only have regular fuzzy pipe cleaners, that’s okay too. I love how festive the sparkly pipe cleaners look, but chenille pipe cleaners will work just as well.

Easy Pipe Cleaner Poinsettia Ornaments

Place the two red pipe cleaners side by side and twist the ends together. You should have about a 1/2 inch of twisted pipe cleaner right at the end.

Place two fingers right next to the twisted end. Wrap the pipe cleaners over your fingers, then twist them twice. After you’ve twisted, you can take your fingers out.

Repeat the process: Place two fingers right next to the previous twist. Wrap the pipe cleaners over your fingers, then twist them twice. Remove your fingers.

Keep wrapping the pipe cleaner around two fingers and twisting until you get to the end of the pipe cleaner.

My fingers were the perfect size to have 6 equally sized loops, just like in the photo below.

Take each of the 6 loops and pull them apart to make large petal shapes like in the photo below.

Bring the two ends together and twist them together two or three times.

You should have a flower shape, just like in the photo below.

Next, we’re going to make the middle of the poinsettia. Cut a gold sparkly pipe cleaner in half.

Easy Pipe Cleaner Poinsettia Ornaments

Thread the gold pipe cleaner through two petals that are opposite from one another, then bend the pipe cleaners upwards.

Easy Pipe Cleaner Poinsettia Ornaments

Twist the gold pipe cleaner together tightly against the top of the red poinsettia shape. Then twist the gold pipe cleaners together all along the entire length of the gold pipe cleaner.

Pinch the end of the gold pipe cleaner and roll it into a tight spiral. Then bend it downwards so it lies flat on top of the middle of the poinsettia, just like in the photo below.

Loop a piece of string through one of the poinsettia petals so you can hang it on your Christmas tree. And our pipe cleaner poinsettia is complete!

Materials

  • 2 sparkly red pipe cleaners (12 inch)
  • 1 sparkly gold pipe cleaner (12 inch)

Instructions

  • Place two red pipe cleaners side by side and twist the ends together so you have about a 1/2 inch of twisted pipe cleaner at the end.
  • Place two fingers right next to the twisted end, between the two pipe cleaners. Wrap the pipe cleaners over your fingers, then twist the pipe cleaners twice. Remove your fingers.
  • Repeat the process: Place two fingers right next to the previous twist. Wrap the pipe cleaners over your fingers, then twist them twice.
  • Keep wrapping the pipe cleaners around two fingers and twisting until you get to the end of the pipe cleaner. You should end up with 6 loops along the length of your pipe cleaners. If you have leftover pipe cleaner at the end, cut the pipe cleaners so there is only 1/2 inch of twists at both ends.
  • Take each of the 6 loops and pull them apart to make large petal shapes.
  • Bring the two ends of the pipe cleaners together and twist them two or three times. Your pipe cleaners should now resemble a flower.
  • Cut a gold sparkly pipe cleaner in half. Save one half for a future creation.
  • Thread the gold pipe cleaner through two petals that are opposite from one another, then bend the pipe cleaners upwards.
  • Twist the gold pipe cleaner together tightly against the top of the red poinsettia shape. Then twist the gold pipe cleaners together all along the entire length of the gold pipe cleaner.
  • Pinch the end of the gold pipe cleaner and roll it into a tight spiral. Then bend it downwards so it lies flat on top of the poinsettia.
