Spooky Babybel Eyeballs

I love Babybel’s. When I was a kid, I used to think cheese covered in wax was the fanciest, coolest thing possible. And when my mom packed a Babybel in my lunch, all my friends would watch with wide eyes as I peeled the strip off the wax and carefully unwrapped the cheese. And then they’d play with the wax like it was play dough. Which in retrospect, seems kind of weird, but I guess that’s what 10 year olds do?

Babybel’s still seem fancy to me, so I never would have thought of using them to make a spooky Halloween snack. But I saw a tutorial for making Babybel eyeballs over at Cute Food for Kids and I thought it looked like fun! So this was more of a fun experiment than anything else. My Babybel eyes didn’t turn out nearly as well as the ones in the their tutorial, but they were still lots of fun! I definitely recommend checking out the eyes from Cute Food for Kids.

This is my favourite part of unwrapping a Babybel. Part of me feels like I’m unwrapping a little gift.

I tried this with both red gel food colouring and with red gel icing, and the food colouring worked waaaaaay better. The icing was just way too thick. (Not to mention sweet icing with cheese was not a great combo.)

I think this would work a lot better if you had a teeny tiny little paint brush. I didn’t have one, so I used a toothpick. It worked, but it took a little while and was definitely difficult to get the dye on the cheese evenly.

Slice some black olives as thin as you can.

And then take the thin olive piece and put it in the center of the cheese.

I used a red M&M to make the center of the eyeball.

I tried using grapes too.

The thin slices of grape were a little too see-through to make for a convincing eye, so I’m not sure I loved the way they looked? What do you think?

I used a brown M&M for the pupils of the grape ones. I kind of like how you can see the red through the green grapes. It kind of helps with the gross eyeball look.

Painting the red veins on the cheese took awhile with the toothpick. It was fine for making just a few, but it would be a huge pain if I had to make a full tray of them. And I think next time I’ll need to make the red lines longer. I probably should have extended them down the sides of the cheese.

But they are pretty spooky, either way!

They are definitely a creepy snack, and my kids got a kick out of them!

I wasn’t crazy about these when I made them, but they are kind of growing on me? Even my pictures are creeping me out a bit, so that’s a good sign that they are sufficiently creepy?
