These pipe cleaner heart rings are SO EASY to make and they’re perfect for Valentine’s Day… or any time! All you need is one pipe cleaner (or two pipe cleaners if you want to make a double heart ring). And in about 5 minutes you can make one of these pretty little heart rings.
I think pipe cleaner rings might be my favourite craft ever. Back in the summer we made pipe cleaner rose rings (also an excellent craft for Valentine’s Day), pipe cleaner butterfly rings, and even pipe cleaner daisy rings and they were so pretty!
You know I love simple crafts that barely take any supplies. Grab a bag of pipe cleaners at the dollar store, and you’re ready to go!
As I was sitting on my floor wondering what I could make from my giant stash of pipe cleaners (you’ve gotta love Amazon), I decided to try something sweet and simple for Valentine’s Day.
I’ll be honest, Valentine’s Day crafts don’t usually do very well on One Little Project. It turns out a lot of people get seriously cranky about the holiday!?
But I still think these little rings are adorable!? And so fun to make with kids. This craft is as low mess as they come!

How to Make a Single Heart Ring
Here’s a list of what you’ll need (including an affiliate link to pipe cleaners on Amazon):
- 1 pipe cleaner (12 inches long)
Take the pipe cleaner and place it behind one of your fingers (the one you plan to wear the ring on), leaving about 1.5 inches to the end of the pipe cleaner.
Wrap the pipe cleaner around your finger. Then twist the end a few times to hold it in place.
You should have a loop on one end of the pipe cleaner.
Sometimes the loop gets smaller when you twist it. So double check that the loop actually fits your finger before you move on. Adjust the size of the loop if needed.
Pinch the end of the pipe cleaner and roll it onto itself to make a spiral.
Keep rolling the pipe cleaner into a tight spiral until there’s about 1/4 inch of space between the ring loop and the spiral.
Bend the ring loop backwards so it’s at a 90 degree angle to the spiral. (So if you put the ring on your finger now, you’d have a spiral on the front of the ring).
Bend the pipe cleaner to adjust the ring position. Try as best as you can to get the ring loop so it’s behind the middle of the spiral.
Now you can shape your heart! Pinch the bottom of the spiral to make the bottom V shape of the heart.
Then press your finger nail into the middle of the top of the spiral to make a bend for the top middle groove of the heart.
Pinch and bend the sides of the heart until you’re happy with the shape.
What if My Heart Doesn’t Stay Together?
Don’t worry, I couldn’t get all of my hearts to stay tightly together either.
If your heart shape tries to unwind when you let go of it, add a small dab of hot glue from the glue gun between the pipe cleaners at the very bottom point of the heart. The little dab of glue really helps the heart keep its shape.
I only had to add glue to some of my heart rings, but not all of them. This particular red heart ring stayed together all on it’s own, without glue.
It really depends how tight you’re able to spiral the pipe cleaner.
How to Make a Double Heart Ring
Here’s a list of what you’ll need (including an affiliate link to pipe cleaners on Amazon):
- 2 pipe cleaners (12 inches long)
I recommend using 2 different pipe cleaner colours, but it’s completely up to you!
Take your 2 pipe cleaners and line up the two ends.
Starting at one end, twist together the two pipe cleaners so that about a 2 inch length of pipe cleaner is twisted.
We’re not going to twist along the whole length, just the part that’s going to go around your finger.
Just like in the single heart ring tutorial above, you’ll need to wrap the twisted end of the pipe cleaner around your finger to make a loop for the ring. (See above for the photo and video for this step).
You should have a ring at one end (double check that it fits your finger before you move on), with two separate pipe cleaners coming out of it, just like in the photo below.
Pinch the end of one of the pipe cleaners and roll it into a tight spiral.
Keep rolling it into a spiral until there’s about 1/4 inch of space left between the ring and the spiral.
Repeat this step for the second pipe cleaner so you have a ring with two spirals on it.
Bend the pipe cleaners to adjust the ring position. Try as best as you can to get the ring loop so it’s behind the middle of the two spirals.
Bend the spirals so that one spiral is in front of the other spiral, like in the photo below.
Just like in the tutorial above, pinch the bottoms of the spirals into a point for the bottom of the hearts. Then press your fingernail into the top of the spirals to make the top of the heart shape.
Adjust the hearts until you’re happy with the shapes.
I added a little dab of hot glue between the pipe cleaners at the bottom points of both of the hearts on this double ring. Unlike the first ring I made, this one didn’t seem to want to keep its shape!
The glue may not be necessary, but it definitely helps keep things in place so your hearts don’t become loose.
You can make single heart rings, or double heart rings in all different colours.
I chose reds and pinks for ours. I love how festive they are for Valentine’s day!
Aren’t they pretty!?
These little rings are a fun project for any time of year really! Wouldn’t they make a fun little friendship ring for the kids to give to to their BFF’s?
