How to Make a Paper Roll Wizard

This paper roll wizard craft is SO MUCH FUN. And with the free printable template, it’s also really easy to make! We love making kids crafts that you can actually play with when you’re done.

Every time I make something that needs cut out pieces – like this paper roll wizard – I scan the pieces so I can make it again afterwards. I gave my 9 and 7 year olds the print outs with all the pieces (I’ll include a link to the printable template below) and they made wizards for themselves without my help!

And you know I love crafts the kids can make themselves! They cut out the pieces from the template and they used tape to hold everything together. My 9 year old even made a lady wizard without the beard and mustache, which I loved! They played with their wizards for hours!

This paper roll wizard is SO CUTE!! And it's really easy to make! What a fun and magical way to transform a toilet paper roll! Such a great recycled craft and a super fun kids craft. Use our free printable template to make it even easier! We love kids activities and creative crafts that you can actually play with when you're done!

My 4 year old little guy was sooooo excited for me to finally finish this blog post so he could play with the wizard we made! This wizard has been sitting on my desk for a LONG time, and my 4 year old has been asking for months to play with it. But I need to photograph the blog crafts we make before they get destroyed played with so I kept having to say no. He kept coming back to my office, picking it up and trying to convince me to let him play with it, poor guy!

My son doesn’t quite have the cutting and gluing skills needed to make this craft on his own yet, but he was pretty happy to finally be allowed to play with the wizard I made for him. All three of my kids really loved making/playing with their paper roll wizards!

How to make a Paper Roll Wizard:

Here’s a list of what you’ll need. The affiliate links below will take you to products on Amazon that are similar to the supplies we used to make this craft:

Apparently toilet paper rolls come in different sizes. We use Kirkland brand toilet paper, and our rolls are 4.5 inches long. If your paper rolls are a different size, you might have to adjust the size of the shapes you’ll need. My template is based on a 4.5 inch long toilet paper roll.

You have two options when you’re making this craft. You can simply print out the template I made and cut out the pieces. OR – you can use the template as a pattern and cut out your own pieces. Maybe you want your wizard to be a different colour? Or maybe you want to use patterned scrap booking paper? There are so many ways to make your wizard unique and fun!

Once you’ve cut out all of your pieces from the template, glue the large blue rectangle onto the bottom edge of the paper roll. This will basically be the wizard’s cape.

You’ll need at least 1 inch of the paper roll showing above the blue paper so you can draw the wizard’s face. (So if your paper rolls are shorter than 4.5 inches, you might have to cut your rectangle to make sure there’s enough room for a face.)

I use a low temperature glue gun for a lot of the crafts I make – mostly because it dries really fast and it’s super strong. But don’t worry – you can also use a glue stick or even regular tape to attach your pieces if you’re more comfortable with that.

You’ll need to use the two rectangular white pieces to make the wizard’s hair and beard.

Make straight, evenly spaced cuts about two thirds of the way up your white rectangles to create a “fringe”. My slits were about 1/4 inch apart.

Place a round marker, pen or pencil along the bottom of the “fringe” then carefully roll the cut paper over the marker. This will give the paper a bit of a curl so it looks more like hair.

Just make sure your marker, pen or pencil is round. If there are any corners on it (you know how normal yellow pencils have several corners going around them and aren’t just smooth and round?), you’ll be able to see those marks in the paper when you’re done rolling it.

Use a thin black marker or black gel pen to draw the wizard’s eyes and glasses.

First draw two circles (those will be the glasses). Then draw a line outwards from the edge of the two circles (those will be the part of the glasses that go over the ears). Next draw the part of the glasses that goes over the nose. And finally draw two circles inside each of the glasses to make your wizard’s eyes.

Attach the beard slightly below the eyes that you drew, making sure the fringe curls outwards. Again, I used a low temperature glue gun to attach the pieces, but you can use a glue stick, or two small pieces of tape on the two edges.

Glue on the mustache and attach the nose. (I used a small pink bead for the nose.)

Attach the hair, making sure the fringe curls outwards. And again, you can use a glue gun, tape or a glue stick.

Next, take the piece of paper that’s shaped like a semi-circle and wrap it into a cone shape. I like to use tape to hold together cones when I make them because it’s nice to be able to move things around if the cone doesn’t quite fit.

The cone needs to be just slightly larger than the top of your paper roll so it sits on top of the wizard’s head. If it’s too big or too small, remove the tape on the cone and adjust the size of the cone until it fits properly.

Now attach the hat to the wizard’s head. I used my trusty glue gun once again to make sure it was secure. But you can use white glue or even tape to hold it in place. (My 9 and 7 year olds used tape when they made their wizards).

Our wizard is looking great, but we need to jazz him up a bit! Add some small gold stars to his hat and cloak!

Grab your marker and draw a small mouth underneath the mustache. We drew a tiny smile on ours.

No wizard is complete without a wand! Take a thin wooden skewer and cut it down to size (about 4 inches). My scissors aren’t quite strong enough to cut through skewers. So I find it works best if you use the scissors to make a small indent all around the skewer, as deep as your scissors will comfortably let you. Then when you go to snap the skewer, it makes a clean break. You can see what I mean in the video above.

I found some glittery foam star stickers at the dollar store. We just removed the adhesive backing and stuck them on the end of the skewer. And voila! His wand is complete!

Is it just me or is this the cutest little wizard you’ve ever seen?!!!

I made mine a bit more traditional but you could totally change up the colours, or make a lady version (like my 9 year old did) if you want!

You can glue on your magic wand if you want to. Or you can leave it loose. We tucked the wand into the slits in the hair and it seemed to hold it really well for us.
