How to Make Cucumber Mint Sugar Scrub

This homemade cucumber mint sugar scrub is SO EASY to make and it’s so luxurious! It takes less than 10 minutes to make a batch and it lasts in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. Did I mention that it smells AMAZING!?

You might be asking, what is sugar scrub? Well, sugar scrubs are a type of exfoliator that help remove dead skin buildup. They’re supposed to help make your skin soft and smooth. Some people even go as far as saying they help give the skin that “glowing” look.

I’m not an expert, but my google searches say that cucumber is amazing for your skin! It’s an antioxidant that contains vitamin C and vitamin A. Supposedly the nutrients in cucumber can even help prevent wrinkles and sun damage!

This cucumber mint sugar scrub recipe is so simple to make! It takes less than 10 minutes to whip up a batch using all natural and fresh ingredients (including fresh cucumber)! You can use it on your face, hands, arms and legs and it leaves the skin feeling super soft and silky smooth. It smells AMAZING and it feels so refreshing on the skin. Such a great homemade gift idea or a fun way to pamper yourself!

We made homemade sugar scrub for the first time a few years ago, and it was soooo fun to have on hand. Every time I opened the jar it felt like I had walked into a spa!

You can use it on your hands, your arms, your legs, even your face (but don’t get it near your eyes). It leaves your skin soft, silky smooth, with the refreshing sensation of cooling peppermint lingering on your skin.

I love that this recipe uses fresh cucumber! I also love that the cucumber makes it turn green – naturally! No need to add any food colouring, the natural green colour is completely… well… natural! (and so pretty!)

Homemade Cucumber Mint Sugar Scrub Recipe

You’ll need about 2 to 3 inches of the cucumber for this sugar scrub recipe. I used 6 thick slices of cucumber.

The recipe is pretty forgiving, so even if you end up adding too much cucumber, you can adjust your sugar scrub later by adding more sugar.

I used my mini food processor to puree the cucumber. You could also use a blender. I kept wishing I had kept our Baby Magic Bullet, because it would have been perfect for this!

If you don’t have a food processor you can use a fine grater or zester, but keep in mind that that will create a slightly different texture than pureeing.

This was the first time I’ve pureed a cucumber, and it smelled SO GOOD. So fresh, and so awesome combined with the smell of the peppermint!

Melt the coconut oil in the microwave for about 15 to 20 seconds. Then combine the sugar, liquid coconut oil and pureed cucumber.

Peppermint Essential Oil vs Peppermint Extract

Add a few drops of peppermint essential oil – probably about 5 to 15 drops depending on the strength of the essential oil. I recommend starting with 5 drops, mixing it all together and then smelling the mixture to see if it needs more peppermint. The mint smell can get very overpowering, very quickly, so go easy on the essential oils until you’re happy with the scent.

If you don’t have essential oils I’ve read that you can also use peppermint extract. But keep in mind that a lot of extracts have alcohol in them, so they aren’t as gentle on your skin as essential oils. You can get nice quality essential oils on Amazon for a pretty reasonable price, but I get it if you want to use what you have at home already!

If you plan to make this sugar scrub recipe to give as a gift, and you’d like to use peppermint extract, I’d recommend making a test batch first, just to make sure you’re happy with how it turns out.

Mix the ingredients together until it forms the consistency of slightly wet snow. It’s not as wet as a Slushie, but not as light as fresh snow – somewhere in between. It should be easy to stir it with a spoon.

If it seems really runny (the cucumber is pretty wet after all), you can stir in 1 or 2 more tablespoons of sugar to thicken it up a little bit. Remember, as soon as you put it in the fridge, it will get thicker since the coconut oil will harden slightly.

I found these cute little glass jars at the dollar store. They’re the same jars I used when we made our lavender lemon sugar scrub a few years ago.

How to Make Sugar Scrub Labels:

Here’s a list of affiliate links to products on Amazon that are similar to what I used to make my labels:

I created a simple label, just using some pretty fonts in Microsoft Word. (You can download the free printable template here).

Sugar Scrub Labels

I printed it on cream coloured card stock using my laser printer.

Then I used my Recollections 1-13/16″ label punch and my Martha Stewart 1/8″ hole punch to cut it out.

Thread the label onto some twine and tie it around the top of the jar and it just looks so pretty! It makes such a beautiful homemade gift!

How to Store Cucumber Sugar Scrub

Since this is fresh cucumber, it’s best to store this sugar scrub in a sealed container in the refrigerator. It will last in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

When you’re ready to use the sugar scrub, you can put some into a small bowl about 10 minutes before you plan to use it. (Or you can use it straight out of the fridge, but I’m sensitive to cold things!)

Can you use sugar scrub on your face?

Yes! But please take extra care not to rub it anywhere near your eyes. You definitely don’t want it accidentally getting in your eyes. (Ouch!)

I find it easiest to use it in the shower. I use it on my hands, arms and legs. It leaves the skin feeling smooth, fresh, and invigorated. You can feel the slight cooling effect of the peppermint oil on your skin, even after you’re out of the shower. It just feels so clean and luxurious!

You can use the sugar scrub on your skin up to 3 times a week.

Materials

  • 6 slices fresh cucumber (about 2 to 3 inches worth)
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons organic coconut oil
  • 10 drops peppermint essential oil

Instructions

  • Puree the cucumber in a food processor until it's smooth.
  • Melt the coconut oil in the microwave for about 15 to 20 seconds until it's liquid.
  • In a bowl, mix together the sugar, coconut oil, cucumber and essential oil until fully combined. It should be slightly thicker than the consistency of wet snow. If it's too wet, add 1 to 2 more Tablespoons of sugar. Remember, it will thicken up in the fridge.
  • You can store your cucumber mint sugar scrub in an air tight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. You can use it straight out of the fridge on your hands, face, arms or legs. Or you can place it in a bowl and let it warm up for 10 minutes before you use it.

Notes

If you have trouble getting your food processor to puree the cucumber, add a few extra slices of cucumber, just to give it more volume. Just be sure to not use all of the pureed cucumber if you add extra... or better yet, just double the recipe!
