Fizzy Paintings

Hello! It’s Megan from Homemade Ginger and I’m sharing a project that is also a fun science experiment for kids!

If you live in an area that can have severe winter weather, you are probably very familiar with the mixed feelings that come when you hear that there is going to be a snow day. We have already had a few snow days this school year and while my kids are overjoyed, I am usually a little dismayed at preparing for being cooped up in the house for a few days. It’s so tempting to give in to letting kids have tons of screen time when it is too cold to play outside, so I’m always looking for fun activities that will keep them busy inside…and maybe even help them learn something new in the process!

These fun fizzy paintings are a great activity for kids of all ages. The best part about this project is that you probably have all the materials you need on hand so if a surprise snow day pops up, you can just grab what you need to do this activity. Kids will love seeing the baking soda interact with the vinegar to create a fun fizzy affect. The colors will bleed together to really make their paintings come alive!

We loved creating a rainbow with different colors of paint and seeing them mix to create new colors once we sprayed vinegar on the paper, but you could do this project with just a few colors if you want!

Fizzy Paintings

Here is what you will need to make this craft:

• Baking Soda


• Vinegar


• Spray Bottle


• Craft Paint


• Paint Brush


• Watercolor Paper or Card Stock

First, mix some baking soda into your paint. The more baking soda you add, the more your painting will fizz later!

Next, create your painting on some card stock or watercolor paper.

You will want to apply the paint nice and thick.

Fill a spray bottle with white vinegar and spray it onto your painting.

Watch the colors fizz and bleed!

Dry the painting on a wire rack. It is fun to see how different it looks!

This is a great process art activity for kids of all ages!
