Classic Homemade Slime Recipe

This homemade Gak recipe is SO easy, and so much fun! You can stretch it into long snakes, roll it into balls (it bounces, by the way!), make hand prints in it, or let it ooze over your hands like slime! If you leave it on a surface it will completely flatten out – so make sure you don’t forget it on the table for any length of time or it might ooze onto the floor! When you are done playing with it, just store it in a large freezer bag and it will keep for weeks!

The most important ingredient here is the Borax. I’ve never bought it before, so it was a bit tricky to find. We found it at Walmart, underneath the OxyClean. It also might be in the laundry detergent aisle. As far as I can tell, you can use any type of white school glue, either one 8 ounce bottle or two 4 ounce bottles. Just don’t use tacky craft glue, or the other specialty glues in the craft aisle. I found this white glue at Walmart in the school supplies aisle.

Classic Homemade Slime Recipe

This homemade Gak recipe is SO easy, and so much fun!

Materials

8 oz bottle of regular white glue Elmer's or generic is fine, just make sure it's school glue, not tacky craft glue
1 teaspoon Borax I found it at Walmart beneath the OxyClean. It also might be in the laundry aisle
1/2 cup of water and
1 cup of water
Food coloring

Instructions

Empty the entire bottle of white glue into a medium sized bowl.
Add food colouring (the more you add, the brighter it will be).
Fill the empty glue bottle with water. Shake it up to try to get some of the leftover glue out. Pour the water into the bowl.
Stir the mixture until it's smooth.
Add more food colouring and stir again if you want a brighter colour.
Dissolve 1 teaspoon of Borax in 1/2 cup of warm water. If you have trouble getting it to dissolve, put the mixture in the microwave for 20 seconds at a time and stir until it's dissolved.
Stir the entire Borax mixture into the glue mixture. It will almost instantly get stringy and turn into slime!
Kneed the rest by hand until all the water is absorbed.
Store in a large freezer bag when you are done playing with it!

Start by pouring the entire bottle of white glue into a bowl.

Fill the empty bottle with warm water, put the lid back on, and shake it up to try to get more of the glue out.

Empty the entire bottle of water into the bowl with the glue. I added the food colouring at this stage too. The more drops you add, the brighter the gak will be!

I skipped this step the first time I made it, and it turned into rubbery silly putty, rather than slime, and it didn’t absorb the water. Still cool, but not the effect I was going for! So make sure it’s completely smooth before you add the Borax.

Stir 1 teaspoon of Borax into 1/2 cup of warm water. If you have trouble getting it to dissolve, try microwaving it for 20 seconds. I found that the extra heat really helped to get the mixture to completely dissolve.
