Sherlock Gnomes Wooden Spoon Puppets

This post is in partnership with Paramount Pictures. As always, the opinions are entirely my own.

Sherlock Gnomes is coming to theaters March 23 and it looks soooo funny. Just the name of the movie makes me smile. It’s the sequel to Gnomeo and Juliet (I love clever movie names!) and it looks like such a fun family movie to take the kids to see.

We put together a fun and simple craft project inspired by the characters in the upcoming film. These Sherlock Gnomes wooden spoon puppets are so cute and they’re really easy to make! Who would have thought that wooden spoons would make such good garden gnomes?!

Sherlock Gnomes is a fun, family friendly movie that highlights the value of teamwork, not taking others for granted, and putting family first.

After a string of garden gnome disappearances in London, Gnomeo & Juliet look to legendary detective Sherlock Gnomes to solve the case of their missing friends and family. They’re on a mission to bring every gnome home. You can watch the trailer here:

These Sherlock Gnomes wooden spoon puppets are such a fun way for kids to act out the movie! Make a Sherlock Gnomes puppet and send him on an adventure to find the missing gnomes.

My kids had so much fun putting on a little puppet show at the kitchen table. My 5 year old loved that the little puppets can hold hands. And my 8 year old loved getting the Sherlock Gnomes puppet to use his little magnifying glass.

We made a Nannette character as well (that’s the frog), but I can’t say it turned out as well. My 5 year old came home from school, saw it on the table and burst out laughing saying, “Wow Mommy! That frog is really ugly!!” LOL Gee, thanks kid!! I guess I haven’t figured out how to successfully turn a spoon into a frog!

Even still, it was the first puppet they wanted to play with – go figure! I haven’t included the frog in the tutorial below. But if you want to make one for yourself, just colour a spoon with a green Sharpie and attach two big googly eyes and a big red pipe cleaner mouth. My 5 year old daughter sneaked the frog into the top left photo in the picture above if you want to have a look.

The rest of the puppets looked awesome!

I got my wooden spoons on Amazon – just be careful to check the size if you order them. I used both the 6″ size and the 4″ size in this craft, mostly because I accidentally ordered the smaller ones first without noticing the size. They come in large packages, so we’ll be sending wooden spoons in school lunches for awhile!

How to Make Sherlock Gnomes Wooden Spoon Puppets

Here’s what you’ll need. The affiliate links below will take you to products on Amazon that are similar to the ones I used for this craft:

I used card stock for this craft but you could definitely use construction paper if that’s what you have at home. I bought two packs of card stock (both the bright colours pack and essential colours pack) when it was on sale at Michael’s last year and it has been so much fun to have on hand for crafts!

Start by cutting out the paper clothing shapes. You’ll need 2 large cone shapes with the points cut off, two sets of legs, and 4 smaller cones with the points cut off.

My large cones were 4″ tall and 4″ wide and the smaller cones were about 2-1/4″ tall by 2-1/4″ wide. You’ll have to measure the shapes against your spoons to make sure the sizes look right.

Take the 4 smaller cones and draw some details on them with a black gel pen. I used a gold paint pen for the belt buckle on Gnomeo’s blue outfit.

The details don’t have to be fancy at all. The simpler you keep things, the easier it will be for you to draw.

I’ve never used wooden spoons for crafting before, but they are so awesome for making little puppets!! You can draw right on the wood with washable markers!

Start by attaching the googly eyes to the spoons using crafter’s tape. Then draw a simple mouth, and maybe eyebrows, eyelashes, rosy checks and/or hair with the washable markers.

I wasn’t happy with the faces yet, so I added a few extra pipe cleaner details, attached with crafter’s tape. I love the brown pipe cleaner eyebrows!

To make the gnomes’ hats, start by bending about 1/2″ of a pipe cleaner tightly behind one of the spoons.

Then wrap the pipe cleaner tightly over top of the spoon, going back and forth in a flattened spiral until you reach the end of the pipe cleaner. I thought it was kind of fun to be able to take off the hats, so I didn’t actually attach them, but if you want yours to stay in place, you can use a bit of crafter’s tape.

For the arms, take a 6″ long light brown pipe cleaner and center it behind the wooden spoon.

Take the right side and pull it tightly to the left. Then take the left side and pull it tightly to the right. As long as you have bent them tightly over the wooden spoon, the arms should stay in place without needing to twist anything.

Then, bend the arms down at the shoulders, elbows, and hands, like in the photo below.

Attach the large green cone to the back of the wooden spoon using crafter’s tape.

Then attach the small brown cone shape and the black leg shapes to the front of the wooden spoon, again using crafter’s tape.

For the magnifying glass, take a 6″ long black pipe cleaner and loop it around a washable marker, twisting it once or twice. Take one of the ends, fold it in half, then bend it into position to be the handle.

Take the other loose end of pipe cleaner and tightly wrap it around the magnifying glass handle, going down towards the end, until you run out of pipe cleaner. Carefully slide the magnifying glass off of the marker.

Bend the hand so it looks like it’s holding the magnifying glass and you’re done Sherlock Gnomes!

Repeat the steps for Gnomeo, Juliet and Benny, or any of the other characters!

It makes me smile to see the actual Sherlock Gnomes character right beside the wooden spoon puppet. The resemblance is uncanny. haha
