Pretzel Bunnies and Ducks

I have a soft spot for chocolate covered pretzels (like my Halloween Pretzel Pumpkins, or Christmas Pretzel Trees), and these pretzel bunnies and ducks are no exception!  They make such a cute Easter treat, or even just a treat to celebrate spring, now that this long, long winter is over!

These pretzel bunnies and ducks are a cute and super easy Easter treat idea. They take less than 20 minutes to make, and are sure to bring out some smiles!

I’m definitely not the first person to make these – if you search Pinterest there are lots of different versions that show up.  But the other ones use black candy pearls and edible decorating markers instead of the coloured decorating gel. I was having trouble finding those, so I used Wilton Decorating Gel to do all of the facial features. I actually think it was way easier.

They are both really simple to make!  For the pretzel ducks, you need:

I find it easiest to melt the chocolate in the microwave for 2 minutes at a really low setting.  On ours, I use 20% power, but of course, all microwaves are different.  And then I repeat as necessary until it’s melted and smooth.

Start by dropping a small amount of yellow chocolate onto the pretzel:

Lift up your spoon from the chocolate where the “wing” would go.  You can see that lifting the spoon gives it some height and texture so it actually looks like a wing!

Add a small dot of the black decorating gel for the eye:

I tried using an orange M&M for the beak but it just didn’t work for me. So instead, use the orange decorating gel to draw a beak over the top little jut out of the pretzel.

Easy Peasy! Four steps:  Turn the pretzel sideways, fill it with yellow chocolate, lift the spoon to make a wing, draw the eyes and beak and DONE!

Now for the pretzel bunnies.  You’ll need:

Again, melt a small amount of the chocolate in the microwave for 2 minutes at a time at super low power (20% or so).

Add a small amount of chocolate to the inside of the pretzels.  This time lift your spoon at the ears or the cheeks.  You don’t really need the texture for this one, but you have to lift the spoon somewhere.  You can see in the photo below that I lifted the spoon at the ears for the two outer pretzels and attempted cheeks for the middle pretzel.  You can decide which works best.

So again, it’s four easy steps: Place out your pretzels, fill them with a small amount of chocolate, draw the ears and nose in pink, and draw the eyes and whiskers in black and DONE!

I haven’t used the decorating gel much, but I was surprised that it actually hardens.  I was worried that the faces would get messed up when I put them in a container, but once they hardened for about an hour, they did pretty well.

My girls went crazy for these!  I’m thinking we are going to have to make them again before Easter!
