Soooo? Do you have your Christmas tree up yet?? My girls have been so excited for Christmas that ours has been up for about a week now and the kids are LOVING it! Every craft project they do, no matter how big or small, they say, “I’m going to hang this on the tree!”
I said they could hang whatever they wanted on the BACK of the tree… ha! Hopefully that doesn’t make me a bad mom for making them hide everything on the back?!
I had to draw the line at my 3 year old’s chalk drawings though. She was just sticking full sheets of construction paper in the tree that were just covered in sidewalk chalk. She had so much chalk on them that if you even breathed on them, there would be a small cloud of chalk dust in the air above them. I’ll be posting the chalk project we were working on together soon, but let’s just say that as a 3 year old, she was a little bit more liberal with the application of her chalk than I was!
These popsicle stick Christmas tree ornaments are So. Much. Fun. I LOVE a good Christmas project that involves decorating a tree, and that’s exactly what this is! You make your outlines from popsicle sticks, and then you can decorate them however you want!

Popsicle Stick Christmas Trees
Here’s what you’ll need to make these ornaments:
- 3 popsicle sticks (one with about 1″ cut from the end of it)
- 1″ x 1″ square of brown card stock
- A star cut from glittery card stock
- A piece of twine, approximately 6″ long
- Hot glue gun
- Scissors and a craft/utility knife
And to decorate them, you can use whatever you have on hand!
- Tiny pom poms
- Sparkly pipe cleaners
- Jingle Bells
- Rhinestones
- Buttons
- Glitter
We used the coloured popsicle sticks from the dollar store. The colours were perfect for what we were doing, and it saved us from the added step of painting regular ones.
For the stars: I cut out a template for the stars from a square piece of black construction paper using the tutorial in this video. I trimmed it down until it was the right size. It turned out perfectly! So I definitely recommend watching the video! I’m terrible at eyeballing stars so I needed a little guidance for sure.
Once I had the proper star shape and size cut out, I traced the outline of it onto the back of some thick, sparkly, yellow card stock and I cut out a bunch of them using scissors.
I wanted our trees to have a short bottom side so I trimmed the bottom popsicle stick on each tree. This step is completely optional, but I found it made the triangles look more “tree” like.
Trim off about 3/4″ to 1″ of the popsicle stick by cutting it with a craft (or utility) knife. The knife won’t cut all the way through – which is fine – all you need to do is score it deep enough on both sides, so that when you bend it, it breaks cleanly.
Add two dabs of hot glue to both ends of the trimmed popsicle stick piece:
Then position the two full length popsicle sticks to make a triangle:
I used about 6″ of twine for each of the hangers. Again using hot glue, I glued them to the top of the triangle so they were sandwiched between the popsicle sticks:
Then I used a small dab of hot glue to attach the star to the top and the 1″ x 1″ tree trunk to the bottom. And they were all set to decorate!
We used small dabs of hot glue to attach the tiny pom poms:
So these are the pom pom ones:
For these ones, we wrapped sparkly pipe cleaners around the popsicle sticks:
And for these ones, we strung a few jingle bells onto a sparkly pipe cleaner and zig-zagged it across the trees like garland:
Aren’t they cute!? Such a fun and easy craft!
My 5 year old and 3 year old loved making these! They couldn’t hold back so when they made their own ornaments they were covered in pom poms, pipe cleaners and jingle bells! And they were so proud of them!
I’ll have to remember to go back and write their names on the back of their ornaments with the year! It will be so fun to pull them out each year!
I let both my girls use the glue gun and they did great! After their practice with the pinecone and pom pom ornaments we made a few weeks ago, they were pretty much experts with it. It’s just one of those really small glue guns, so it doesn’t get very hot.
I’ve got to start using popsicle sticks more, because these Christmas trees were great! Once you make the tree, the sky is pretty much the limit in terms of how you decorate them! You can use buttons, ribbon, pipe cleaners, pom poms, even rhinestones to dress them up! It’s a simple holiday craft that’s great for kids of all ages!
