Old Fashioned Apple Dip Recipe

When I was growing up, my mom used to give me apple slices with a small bowl of brown sugar to dip them into. I think my husband would flip out if he saw me giving our girls a bowl of sugar each, but it was different times, and it was truly delicious! (Not that you’ll ever go wrong in the eyes of a child if you give them a bowl of sugar!)

This apple dip recipe reminds me of those times when I was little. It’s 3 simple ingredients and it’s delicious. You can add Skor bits, or you can add nuts, but the simple ingredients on their own make it taste like caramel without complicating things.

(I just took a break to get up and slice myself some apples to go with the leftover apple dip. These photos were driving me nuts and they motivated me to get a snack! I’m happy to report that it’s still delicious 3 days after making it.)

I left the cream cheese on the counter for several hours so it was definitely a soft consistency, but it still took a bit of work to get everything to mix together smoothly.

Eventually I resorted to using the whisk to get it completely smooth:

I’m a pretty big fan of my apple slicer (which makes a great gift by the way if you know someone who needs one!). It’s so easy to get perfectly shaped apple slices with next to no effort.  (You’ll see below what I was planning with my apple slices).

With the apple slicer, you push down, and voila, perfectly sliced apples!

If you aren’t going to be serving your apples right away, toss them into a Ziploc freezer bag and coat them with a little bit of lemon juice. That way they won’t go brown and look unappetizing if they are going to be sitting out for a little while.

Pour lemon juice into a ziploc bag with apples to keep them from going brown.

Canadian Thanksgiving is long past and I’ve nearly missed out on American Thanksgiving too, but this is the whole reason I made apple dip to begin with:

Set up apples around a bowl of dip and use candy corn as the beak and chocolate chips as the eyes.

How cute is this turkey made from apples and dip? I used three different apple colours and set them all up around the dip, using a candy corn piece as the beak and chocolate chips and the eyes. I’ll have to remember this for next year. Hopefully I won’t be so late making it next time!

The apple dip is so simple, but it’s so delicious! The brown sugar and vanilla extract make it taste very similar to caramel.

It’s a great snack or you could even use it as an appetizer. I don’t think I’ve ever served fruit as an appetizer? But it would look beautiful set up on a nice platter and would go together wonderfully with a gourmet cheese tray. And seeing that it’s delicious, I’m pretty sure you can’t go wrong!

I’m a little bit worried I may never want to eat an apple on it’s own ever again after trying this dip!

Of course, apples don’t “need” to be dipped in anything.  But then again, neither do potato chips, or vegetables for that matter!  It just makes them that much better and makes for a fun family snack. Oh, and if you aren’t going to serve a bowl of sugar with your apples, at least sprinkle some brown sugar on top of the dip before serving. There, just like from my childhood.

This old fashioned apple dip is SO GOOD! Only three ingredients and it tastes just like I remember from when I was a kid! YUM!
