How to make Lolly Pop Spiders

This morning, we took our 5 year old out for breakfast. She was home from school because she had a fever last night, and I didn’t think I should send her to school, just in case. So we went to this little diner that has a basket of lolly pops by the door. My girls get SO EXCITED any time we say we’re going there because apparently, to a three year old and a five year old, the idea of choosing any lolly pop you want from a big basket overflowing with colourful lolly pops is the best thing ever.

So this morning after my five year old finished her oversized pancake drenched with syrup, my husband walked her up to the front of the restaurant and she chose a blue lolly pop. She brought it back to the table, opened it up, and promptly dropped it on the floor under the table. I looked at the two little pieces of dirt on it with raised eyebrows and said to her “Um, I don’t think that’s good to eat anymore?” foolishly thinking my question would make her throw it away.

But instead, she swiftly dipped it in her water glass, briefly swished it around and popped it back into her mouth before I could do anything and said “See mom, no problem! It’s clean now!” haha… I’m not much of a germophobe, but there was visible dirt on it, so I was cringing on the inside! For some reason, the whole situation made me feel old. I guess my eating-lolly-pops-off-the-floor-days are long over!

I don’t particularly like to eat lolly pops in general anymore, but my girls love them. And they LOVED these spider lolly pops! Almost as much as they loved the lolly pop ghosts we made last week. (We had leftovers, hence the second lolly pop post this week.). And surprisingly, they love Tootsie Pops too. My 3 year old would eat three a day if I’d let her. (Don’t worry, I don’t let her…)

How to make Lolly Pop Spiders

These spider lolly pops are quick and simple to make! Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 round lolly pop (we used Tootsie Pops)

  • 2 googly eyes

  • 2 black pipe cleaners

  • hot glue

Take two black pipe cleaners, and cut them in half.

Line up the four pipe cleaner pieces beside each other and center them as best you can. It’s okay if the lengths aren’t perfectly even – you can bend them afterwards to make up for it.

Place the lolly pop on top of the pipe cleaners, about 1/3 of the way in from one side.

Wrap the long side around the lolly pop and loop it around.

You’ll end up with something that looks like this. I personally preferred the side that’s showing here to be the side that ends up with the eyes, but take a look for yourself, and decide which side you think looks better as the face.

This is what the other side looks like:

Bend the legs into little L’s. They don’t have to be perfect, just do your best to shape them into little legs. Bend the pipe cleaners slightly sideways too so you have equal spacing between all the legs.

Put a small dab of hot glue on the back side of the googly eyes. You can use white glue if you really need to, but hot glue works sooooooooooo much better! It’s pretty much instant AND they won’t fall off.

Place the eyes towards the front of the pipe cleaner spider’s body.

You want the eyes about 1/3 of the way over the body. Not the middle. Not the edge. Just slightly back:

And then repeat for however many spiders you plan on making.
