Don’t you just LOVE easy crafts!? Not only are these pinecone owls completely adorable and fun — They are also sooooo easy to make! Warm up your glue gun and by the time you’ve cut out the pieces, you’ll be nearly done. You can make about 3 or 4 of these pinecone owls in about 10 minutes!
Or at least a grown up can make them that quickly. It will probably take the kids a little bit longer. 🙂 But if your kids are anything like mine, you’ll probably end up “helping” them by making the entire craft anyway. Do your kids do that too?
Even when I end up making most of the craft for them, my kids are still convinced they made it themselves. But they’re so happy when we’re done and they have something cute that they can go off and play with!
I absolutely love that this craft uses simple craft supplies that you probably have at home already. And if you don’t, you can get everything at the dollar store. So simple!

How to Make Pinecone Owls
Here’s what you’ll need. The affiliate links below will take you to products on Amazon that are similar to the ones I used for this craft:
- Pinecones
- Assorted Felt (I used red, blue, light orange and brown)
- Brown or Orange Pipe Cleaner
- 2 Googly Eyes
- Scissors
- Glue Gun
You can get all of the supplies for this craft from the dollar store. I even found the adorable googly eyes with eyelashes at the dollar store! I’ll admit, the felt was leftover from some of the projects I made for my book, Low Mess Crafts for Kids, but you can usually find felt at the dollar store as well.
Start by cutting out the shapes you need for your owl: 1 eyebrow shape, 2 circles (just larger than your googly eyes), 2 wings, and 1 small beak.
If it looks too hard to make the shapes, don’t worry – I have you covered! I scanned the exact pieces I used for my owl and made a printable template for you. Just cut out the pieces and trace them onto your felt. Easy peasy!
Just remember to print the template at 100% scale, otherwise the sizes will be off. Click the link below or click on the image to download the printable PDF.

Next, cut little slits into the eye circles, all the way around. To be honest, this is completely optional. By the time I glued on my googly eyes, you couldn’t really see the texture created by the slits, so it’s totally okay if you want to skip this step.
Using a glue gun, attach the googly eyes to the blue felt eye circles. Then attach the blue felt eye circles onto the brown eyebrow shape.
Add a small dab of hot glue on the lower edge of the brown eyebrow piece, right in the middle, then attach the beak shape.
Using a glue gun, attach the owl face shape to the pine cone. You don’t need a lot of glue to attach it. Figure out where your eyes are going to go on the pinecone, then add a few small globs of glue onto the tips of the pinecone pieces that stick out.
I added glue to about 4 places on the pinecone, then I gently pressed my owl face onto the glue.
Next, attach the owl wings to the side of the pinecone.
I only glued the top half of my wing to the pinecone because I wanted the lower part of the wing to flair out a bit.
Finally, make your owl’s legs from one 12″ pipe cleaner. Fold the pipe cleaner in half. Then fold the ends down again to make an “M” shape.
Bend one end of the “M” by about 1/2″ in and out to make 3 zig zags (these will be the claws). Pinch each zig zag closed to shape it into a claw.
Repeat those steps for the other end so you have two owl “claws”
Pinch the end of each “claw” and bend it downwards.
Attach the feet to the bottom of the pinecone using a glue gun. I looped the center of my feet around the stem that sticks out from the bottom of the pinecone.
Turn him right side up and you’re done!
You could even glue a string to the top of the owl and turn him into a Christmas ornament!
I was a little surprised at how easy these were to make! For me, the hardest part was figuring out the felt shapes. But once I had a template, it was so fast to make them!
They would look so cute on the Christmas tree if you make a bunch of them, all in different colours!
