Fire Breathing Paper Roll Dragon Craft

This fire breathing, paper roll dragon craft is so fun! It seriously cracks me up when I look at the photos of the flames coming out of the dragon’s mouth when you blow into the tube. I just love it! And it’s ridiculously simple to make. Save this one for your crafty bucket list, because it’s SO MUCH FUN to make!

We decided to officially transform our guest room into my office/craft room last month. I feel like the luckiest person in the world to have my own space at home! It has always had my sewing machine and lots of messy shopping bags and laundry baskets overflowing with craft supplies on the floor. Actually, you couldn’t really see the floor through the mess. But a few weeks ago we finally got rid of the guest bed, and I finally organized all of my craft supplies. You’re probably picturing something a whole lot nicer than what it really ended up as, so don’t give me too much credit.

I took everything that was on the floor and in laundry baskets, and I organized it into bins on some shelves. Now I have about 15 clear, organized bins. I’ve got a bin for pipe cleaners (I have a shocking amount of pipe cleaners. What I’ll do with so many of them, I have no idea?), a bin for cookie cutters, and my ultimate favourite – a bin for glues, tapes and adhesives! I get pretty giddy thinking about the adhesives bin and it’s always the one I go for first. Somehow it makes me feel all professional. Can you be a professional crafter? Yes. Let’s just go with yes.

My 6 year old and 4 year old are IN LOVE with my craft room. They’re eyes light up when they see all of the bins of supplies and they can’t wait to do crafts with me! And believe me, they LOVE doing crafts! Every day, over and over they ask “Mommy, can we do a craft?” And to tell you the truth, I’m usually not very organized. I’ll give them 6 or 7 items and tell them to make something with those supplies (and of course they get something from my trusty adhesives bin…). It’s so much fun to see what they come up with. Their little minds are so creative right now!

I gave them everything they needed to make these fire breathing dragons and do you know what they came up with? Butterflies. Ha! They started as pink and purple dragons, but at some point they took a turn and decided they needed wings so we added wings. And then the flames turned into antennae and tails.

I used to be frustrated when they went off on these tangents, but this is their way of being creative and expressing themselves, and it doesn’t always turn out how I envisioned (well, actually it never turns out how I envision!). But I’ve learned to roll with it. And in the end they were SO HAPPY to do the craft, and even happier that I sat down with them for 40 minutes to make it with them. I made the dragons, they played with the dragons, and then they made pretty little butterflies.

Paper Roll Dragon Craft

These fire breathing dragons are so easy to make! Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Paper Roll (Toilet paper roll, paper towel roll, or wrapping paper roll)

  • Green or Red Construction Paper

  • 2 Medium Pom Poms

  • 2 Small Pom Poms

  • 2 Medium Googly Eyes

  • Red, Yellow and Orange Tissue Paper

  • Glue Stick

  • Glue Gun or Glue Dots

All of the toilet paper rolls I had around the house had the end bits of toilet paper glued on them. Which was kind of gross looking for this tutorial. So I raided my wrapping paper bin and used a wrapping paper tube instead. I had to take the Toy Story wrapping paper off of one of the rolls and try to roll it up again without a tube (which was surprisingly difficult), but it was worth it.

I used my exacto knife and scissors to cut the wrapping paper tube to about the same size as a toilet paper roll.

Then I cut the construction paper to the size of the paper roll so it would completely cover it and I used a glue stick to attach it to the roll.

Next, you’re going to need to choose two medium pom poms, two small pom poms, and a set of googly eyes. I went with green to match the tube, but I’m a little boring that way, so feel free to let your creativity sore on this one!

We used a glue gun to attach the eyes to the pom poms. You can use glue dots if you prefer. If you don’t have glue dots, they are AMAZING for kids crafts. Super sticky for crafting with pom poms and easier to manage with kids than a glue gun. You can get them from any craft store, or you can check out the ones I use on Amazon here.

Next, attach the pom poms to the paper tube:

For the fire, I used red, yellow and orange tissue paper, cut into about 9″ or 10″ long, pointy strips.

Then use a glue stick to attach them to the inside of the paper tube. This is exactly how many tissue paper strips I added to mine. You don’t need any tissue paper strips on the bottom of the roll. Gravity works against you here, so when you blow them, the bottom ones won’t move. Or at least, when I tried them on the bottom, they didn’t move. You can test it out to see what I mean.
