Easy Feather Boa Sock Puppet

Want to know the best way to make someone laugh? (Even you.) Give a toddler this sock puppet and ask them to make it talk. Oh my word. It’s seriously the cutest thing ever! My 3 year old does an amazing monster voice and it makes me laugh no matter how my day is going!

“Would you like a coooookie??” I wish they had blue feather boas at my craft store! Can’t you picture cookie monster if this guy was blue!?

This easy feather boa sock puppet makes me smile. He just looks so happy. Or maybe it’s a “she”? But I think if I wanted to make a girl, I would have gotten some dollar store fake eyelashes and attached them to the eyes. (So add that to your shopping list if you plan to make a girl!) This is such a fun and easy way to make a homemade puppet!

Some puppets are really tricky to make. But this is not one of those puppets. You can do it, I promise. And I also promise that you will get some good laughs from it!

I used a feather craft boa from the craft store for this sock puppet. It’s not the type of boa that’s loaded with feathers (but you can use those too if you like).

I looked it up on Amazon, and it looks like the official name is “Marabou feather boa”. It’s much skinnier than a regular feather boa, and the texture is finer. Amazon says they’re typically used for crafts. So keep an eye out for them at the craft store. If you’re lucky, you might even find one at the dollar store!

How to Make An Easy Feather Boa Sock Puppet

Here’s what you’ll need. The affiliate links below will take you to products on Amazon that are similar to the ones I used for this craft:

• Feather Craft Boa


• Fuzzy Sock


• Large Googly Eyes (mine were 1″ wide)


• Large White Pom Poms (mine were 1.5″ wide)


• Self-Adhesive Craft Foam


• Scrap of pink felt or pink paper


• Glue Gun

I recommend using thick, fuzzy socks for your sock puppet (adult sized socks, not kid size). Since you’ll be attaching the feather boa with a hot glue gun, it will stick a whole lot better if there’s lots of texture in the sock for the glue to hold on to.

To make the puppet’s mouth, trace a circle onto a dark piece of self adhesive craft foam. I used a styrofoam cup for the circle.

Cut out the circle and a small felt tongue. If you don’t have felt for the tongue, feel free to use pink or red paper instead.

Score through the paper on the back of the craft foam using a craft knife or a pair of scissors.

Just make sure you don’t cut all the way through the foam when you score it.

Scoring it will make the fold in the mouth look cleaner.

Attach the felt tongue to the middle of the circle so the flat edge lines up with the fold.

Put the sock over your hand so that the ankle is roughly where your knuckles are. Use your other hand to push the toes of the sock inwards to make a mouth.

Make sure you’ve pushed the toes of the sock in enough so that the foam mouth shape will fit inside.

Position the mouth piece, then carefully remove the paper backing.

The adhesive will help keep the foam in position, but it’s not strong enough to keep it secure. You’ll want to go around the entire edge of the mouth with hot glue.

Then carefully close the mouth and make sure the sock covers the glue.

I recommend making the puppet with your hand in the sock for most of these steps. It will help make sure everything is in the right position. Just remember that you’ll be able to feel the heat from the hot glue through the sock, so be careful not to burn yourself.

Add a 2″ line of hot glue to the side of the puppet, going towards the corner of the mouth.

Press the end of the feather boa onto that 2″ line of hot glue.

Squeeze out another line of hot glue about 1/2″ from the bottom edge of the foam mouth.

Then carefully press the feather boa onto the glue.

Add some hot glue beside the corner of the mouth (about 1/2″ away from the mouth) and make sure you let it dry before you bend the boa to go around up and around to the top of the mouth.

Work your way around the sock.

Keep adding hot glue and wrapping it around the sock until you reach the end of the boa, or the end of the sock. It kind of looks like a big, fuzzy cocoon at this point!

Make sure you don’t wrap the boa too tightly. There isn’t much stretch to the feather boa, so if it’s too tight you’ll have trouble getting it off your hand. Don’t worry though… your kids’ hands are smaller than yours, so even if you have trouble getting your hand in and out, they’re little hands will slip right in. I may or may not be speaking from experience. 😉

I used the largest googly eyes I had and glued them onto white pom poms that were just a little larger.

Add some glue to the bottom of each pom pom and glue each one onto your puppet’s head.

If there’s hair blocking the eyes or the mouth, feel free to give him a little hair cut and trim away any unwanted hair.

I love how happy this sock puppet looks!

And it’s just so simple to make!

You can pretty much make the whole thing in less than 20 minutes!
