This northern lights chalk art project for kids is so simple yet so beautiful! There is something so fun about working with chalk on a black piece of construction paper! It’s almost magical that the chalk begins to look like a glowing light on the paper!


My poor 8 year old was home with a cold the other day and was happy to help me figure out the best way to make northern lights. (Plus it helped me get her away from the TV for awhile.) We sat together on my office floor and tried a few different methods – you can see pictures of what we came up with below. This one ended up being the easiest to create. It’s super simple to make and it gives you a gorgeous northern lights mountainscape!


My office floor is now covered with the different northern lights pictures that we created. Once you start, it’s hard to stop! It’s so much fun to explore and combine the different methods, and pretty much everything we created looks beautiful. You might have some messy fingers and a little bit of chalk dust, but it’s lots of fun!

We’ve used this method to make awesome Glowing Christmas Lights and even a Glowing Jack-o-Lantern, but this is the first time we used chalk pastels – and they are awesome!


Don’t get me wrong, if you only have regular chalk – or even sidewalk chalk – those will definitely work here too. But the chalk pastels give you a much brighter and vibrant colour that contrasts really nicely on the black construction paper. They’re pretty inexpensive and the results look so good!

Start by cutting out a mountain shape from a piece of legal sized printer paper (It’s the paper that’s slightly longer than regular printer paper). Construction paper is a bit wider than regular letter sized printer paper so the legal paper works really well.


If you only have regular letter sized paper, just cut out and tape on a short extension piece to your mountain to make it cover the construction paper.

You can use regular chalk if it’s all you have – even sidewalk chalk will work. But in order to get bright and vibrant colours, it works best if you use chalk pastels. I ordered mine from Amazon (the link to the exact set that I used is in the list above). The colours are beautiful!

If you’re making this craft with kids, you might want to tape the construction paper and the mountain to the table to keep things from slipping around. I just used one hand to press down the papers while I coloured with the chalk.


Colour over the mountain and onto the black construction paper extending about 1.5 inches beyond the mountain as in the photos below.

Continue colouring over the stenciled mountain with different colours until you’ve reached the end. Don’t let that white mountain stencil move yet!

While carefully holding the white mountain stencil in place, use a cotton ball to rub the chalk and create the lights. Start with the cotton ball on the mountain and move it onto the construction paper into the sky. Feel free to overlap the colours a little bit as you rub – it will help with the sense of moving lights.


I used a fresh cotton ball for the different colours so they wouldn’t mix too much. It gets messy fast, so be sure to keep your table protected and maybe keep a towel close by to rub your chalky fingers onto.

When all the colours have been rubbed away from the mountain, carefully pull away the mountain stencil. Look at that beautiful glow!

I found that the best way to create the stars (or maybe they’re snowflakes?) is to dab a small amount of white acrylic paint onto the sky using a small paintbrush.


Create big stars/snowflakes, small star/snowflakes and don’t forget to add some close to the mountain as well.

I tried quite a few different methods with the chalk to get the look of northern lights:

For the image above, I used white oil pastels to create the mountains. Be sure to leave an open black space between the mountains to define the shapes. Then draw wavy lines in the night sky to outline where your different colours will go.


Colour 1″ bands of colour over the lines in the sky (similar to in the tutorial above), then use a cotton ball to blend the colours – again, using a fresh cotton ball for each colour. Draw the tree using a black oil pastel. Use a white oil pastel for the stars.

The photo above is the artwork my oldest daughter created (she’s almost 9 years old). I was impressed that she could create it so easily on her own! It’s fun to see what colour combinations kids come up with!

[EDIT] My 6 year old daughter created the art work in the image above. She was so proud that she wanted me to add hers to this blog post as well. 🙂  I helped her a little bit with colouring the white mountains, but she was able to do the rest by herself.

For the image above, I used the method described by Kathy AngelNik. She has an excellent tutorial on her website, so I’ll just give you a quick run down of how I made mine and you can visit her site to get more details.


Use a white oil pastel to create the mountains, making sure to leave a black space between them to define the shapes. Spread a light layer of blue chalk onto the night sky by rubbing it sideways/flat on the paper. Using chalk, draw lines to sketch out the shape of your northern lights. Keep adding thick lines of different coloured chalk to fill in the northern lights. Use your fingers to rub and blend the chalk colours together. (This gets messy fast!) Use a white oil pastel for the stars.
