Beaded Pipe Cleaner Shamrocks

These beaded pipe cleaner shamrocks are so easy to make and they’re so fun for St. Patrick’s Day! All you need are pipe cleaners and beads and you can make these little good luck charms in less than 10 minutes.

This is a super fun craft for kids and a great activity for working on fine motor skills. You can fill up the pipe cleaners with beads, just like I did. Or you can choose to add just a few beads to the pipe cleaners (I’ll show you pictures of the one my daughter made below). It’s totally up to you!

These shamrocks would be fun to make with pipe cleaner rainbows or really any one of our pipe cleaner crafts. I love when you only need a few supplies to make things. It makes the clean up so simple!

I was making these shamrocks while sitting on my office floor the other day (because that’s where my best crafting is done!). And before I knew it, all 3 of my kids were sitting on the floor with me, making various things out of pipe cleaners and beads.

My 7 and 10 year olds were able to make these beaded pipe cleaner shamrocks all by themselves (see the photo below for my 7 year old’s. She was SO PROUD!). My 5 year old loved the idea of making these, but in the end, he had one yellow pipe cleaner filled with yellow beads that he wrapped into a knot. lol Not quite what we were going for, but he was thrilled!

There’s no rules when you’re making crafts!

All you need are 3 green pipe cleaners and some green plastic pony beads!

You can definitely find pipe cleaners at the dollar store. Sometimes you can find pony beads at the dollar store too. Otherwise you can get them at any craft store or on Amazon.

Beaded Pipe Cleaner Shamrocks - Supplies

Line up the ends of the green pipe cleaners then twist them together.

Beaded Pipe Cleaner Shamrocks - Step 1

You want all the pipe cleaners twisted together along a 4 inch length at one end of the pipe cleaners.

When you’re done, spread apart the 3 pipe cleaner ends so they look like the photo below.

Beaded Pipe Cleaner Shamrocks - Step 2

Next you can add the beads onto the ends of the pipe cleaners.

I added 25 beads to each pipe cleaner. You don’t have to be exact, but it does help to make the shamrock look uniform if there’s an equal number of beads on each pipe cleaner.

Beaded Pipe Cleaner Shamrocks - Step 3

After you’ve added all the beads, take the end of one of the beaded pipe cleaners and bend it into a loop.

Twist the end of the pipe cleaner onto the opposite end to close the loop.

Beaded Pipe Cleaner Shamrocks - Step 4

Repeat for the other 2 pipe cleaners.

You’ll have 3 loops with the 3 pipe cleaner ends twisted onto the opposite end, just like in the photo below.

Beaded Pipe Cleaner Shamrocks - Step 5

Notice how there’s a 1 inch length of pipe cleaner at the end of the loops in the photo above?

We’re going to twist the 3 loops together at the bottom of the loops so the loops sit tight on the end of the twisted pipe cleaners.

Beaded Pipe Cleaner Shamrocks - Step 6

You might have to scroll back up by 2 pictures to see what I mean. Notice here how the loops are tight on the top of the pipe cleaner stem.

And 2 pictures above, there was a 1 inch length of pipe cleaner at the end of each loop. I also show this in the video above if you’re still finding it confusing.

Beaded Pipe Cleaner Shamrocks - Step 7

Your shamrock is almost done – except it has a super long stem.

Bend the end of the stem upwards to shorten the stem. I think that 2 to 3 inches of stem looks pretty good.

Beaded Pipe Cleaner Shamrocks - Step 8

After you’ve bent up the stem, you can twist all the pipe cleaners in the stem together.

Beaded Pipe Cleaner Shamrocks - Step 9

Bend and shape the pipe cleaners – both the loops and the stem – until you’re happy with the shape of your shamrock.

And you’re done! I love how cute and easy these little shamrocks are!

My 7 year old made the light green shamrock in the photo below all by herself. She was so proud of it and begged me to show you what hers looks like!

If you don’t want to bead the entire length of pipe cleaner that’s okay! My daughter only beaded 2 of the pipe cleaners, and only added a few beads to each one, and it still looked great!

Materials

  • 3 Green Pipe Cleaners (12 inch)
  • 75 Green Pony Beads (approximately)

Instructions

  • Line up the ends of all 3 pipe cleaners then twist them together.
  • Twist about a 4 inch length along the pipe cleaners. Then spread apart the 3 open ends of the pipe cleaner so that it almost resembles a rake.
  • Add about 25 beads to each pipe cleaner. Or only add a few beads to the pipe cleaners. It's completely up to you!
  • After you've added the beads, take the end of one of the beaded pipe cleaners and bend it into a loop.
  • Twist the end of the pipe cleaner onto the opposite end to close the loop. Repeat this step for the other 2 pipe cleaners. You'll have 3 loops with a 1 inch length of twisted pipe cleaner before the main stem.
  • Twist the 3 loops together at the 1 inch length of twisted pipe cleaner below the loops. You want the loops to sit right on top of the stem without a gap.
  • Bend the end of the stem upwards and back onto itself to shorten it so that the stem is only about 2 to 3 inches long. Twist all the pipe cleaners in the stem together.
  • Bend and shape the pipe cleaners - both the loops and the stem - until you're happy with the shape of your shamrock!
