Beaded Pipe Cleaner Flowers

These beaded pipe cleaner flowers are so fun! They take less than 10 minutes to make and they’re great for developing fine motor skills. And aren’t they pretty?! They’d make a summery little flower arrangement for the kids’ night table! And wouldn’t they be great for Mother’s Day?

Pipe cleaners are turning into one of my favourite craft supplies. I have to laugh when I go back and read my post on how to make pipe cleaner tulips and daffodils, because at that point, I had a ridiculous supply of pipe cleaners and no idea what to do with them. Fast forward a few years (and a craft book) later and we’ve made so many fun things!

These beaded pipe cleaner flowers are our latest adventure into making totally awesome things using nothing but beads and pipe cleaners. Who knew the combination of those two simple craft supplies could be so much fun!?

These beaded pipe cleaner flowers are SO PRETTY and they're really easy to make! This is such a fun kids craft and a great activity to develop fine motor skills. Each flower takes less than 10 minutes to make using simple craft supplies. This is a great spring craft or summer craft idea! Wouldn't they make an awesome homemade Mother's Day gift!?

My daughters have quite the collection of beads, so I borrowed some of their plastic pony beads (there’s a link to the type of beads we used in the list below).

You can use any type of bead to make these flowers. As long as you can slide the beads over the pipe cleaners, you’ll be good to go!

How to Make Beaded Pipe Cleaner Flowers Tutorial

Here’s a list of what you’ll need. The affiliate links below will take you to products on Amazon that are similar to the supplies we used to make these flowers:

My dollar store sells the 6 inch size pipe cleaners and they’re really convenient for quick and easy crafts like this one. But don’t worry, if you don’t have 6 inch pipe cleaners, you can just cut full length pipe cleaners in half.

I recommend using five 6 inch pipe cleaners of the same colour. In this tutorial, I used purple pipe cleaners.

Thread the pony beads onto the purple pipe cleaners. I added 15 beads to each of my pipe cleaners.

If the kids get tired of threading the beads onto the pipe cleaners, they don’t have to fill them up like I did. Even just 3 to 5 beads on each pipe cleaner looks great.

Just don’t add more than 15 beads or you won’t have enough pipe cleaner showing to twist it into shape.

Twist together the ends of each pipe cleaner to make the petals. You should end up with 5 teardrop shaped petals.

Lay the end of one of the petals over top of the 12 inch long green pipe cleaner, leaving about 1.5 inches of green pipe cleaner empty at the end. Just like in the photo below.

Then twist the end of the petal around the green pipe cleaner to hold it in place.

Place the second petal right next to the first petal (try not to leave any green pipe cleaner showing) and twist the end around the green pipe cleaner to hold it in place.

Continue twisting the end of each petal around the green pipe cleaner until all five have been attached.

Cross the 1.5 inch end of the green pipe cleaner over the longer end of the green pipe cleaner. Again, try to get it tight enough that there’s no green pipe cleaner showing in the middle of the flower.

Then twist the 1.5 inch green pipe cleaner end around the stem. Continue twisting the pipe cleaner down the stem until the entire 1.5 inch end has been twisted in.

The petals will probably be overlapping a little bit, so bend them into position to make your flower shape.

Pinch the end of the yellow pipe cleaner and roll it into a tight spiral.

Add a little bit of glue to the middle of the flower and attach the yellow spiral to the middle of your flower. (The glue gun also works great here!)

If you want to avoid using glue, you can place your yellow pipe cleaner underneath the flower (before you’ve rolled it into a spiral). Then you can bend the pipe cleaner between a top petal and a bottom petal, twist it in the middle, and then roll it into a spiral – just like we did for our pipe cleaner daisy rings. There’s pictures and instructions in that post to show you exactly what I mean.

The beaded pipe cleaner flowers are pretty heavy, so they won’t stand up on their own. So if you want to make a flower arrangement, you’ll need to insert the green pipe cleaner into a green drinking straw.

The straws hold them up beautifully. I really love how you can shape them using bendy drinking straws!!
