Apple and Caramel Fall Treats

I’m addicted to Halloween candy. Every. Single. Year. I can’t help myself. The number of trick-or-treaters that we get at our house goes down each year, but what if it goes up again? And what if we run out of candy!?

Once we had to run to the store on Halloween night to get more candy because we ran out, and I’m pretty much scarred from that experience. (But in case you’re wondering, the candy was already on sale. Bargain!) Now I buy two or three big Costco boxes of mini chocolate bars at the beginning of September each year (and I eat a bunch of it before Halloween…), and then we get about 50 trick-or-treaters.

So I’m left with about 200 mini chocolate bars. Plus the kids giant loot bags. And whatever they bring home from school. Sooooooooo much candy. And I end up eating most of it by myself, because my gluten free and dairy free husband isn’t going to eat Halloween candy. And my kids only like “candy” as opposed to chocolate. *sigh*

But my friends, I have a somewhat healthier alternative. APPLES! Oh yeah…

These apple and caramel fall treats are such a GREAT alternative to candy! They'd be fantastic as teachers gifts, party favors or even fall birthdays!

I saw the idea for these apple and caramel fall treats over on Alabama Southern Living and I thought, “Yes! This is the healthy treat I’ve been looking for!” Or at least, you know, healthier than eating 8 mini chocolate bars every night for 3 months.

If you’re feeling a little overwhelmed by all the candy going around, this is such an amazing alternative! And it’s soooooo yummy!

Here’s what you’ll need:

Seriously, it’s that easy! And the caramel doesn’t even need to be refrigerated! I got the caramel cups at the grocery store for $1 each.

They’re the individual size cups which is just enough caramel dip for one apple. Mmmmm… So yummy!

Cut a square piece of cellophane just large enough to go around the apple with a bit to spare. Then set the apple on top of the caramel cup.

Bring the corners of the cellophane up and over the apple and bunch it all together.

I used mini plastic hair elastics to hold it together. You can tie the ribbon around right away to hold it together, but the elastic made it easier for me.

Sorry, it’s hard to see in the photo below because the elastics are clear, but I got them from the dollar store and they’re about as wide as your thumb.

It looks the nicest with two different colours and patterns of ribbon. I used sparkly orange ribbon and polka dot black ribbon, both from Michael’s.

Tie the wider ribbon on first.

Then tie the thinner ribbon around and tie it in a bow.

If you want to personalize them, you can create little labels from fancy paper and loop them through the ribbon.

They’re so quick to make and you can feel good knowing you’re promoting healthy fruit instead of candy. Not that I have anything against candy – I still plan on eating lots of it this year. But if I ate more apples instead of candy, I think we can all agree it would be a healthier choice.
