Tissue paper flowers tutorial – These look just like balloon flowers!

Here are step by step instructions to make tissue paper flowers that look just like balloon flowers.  I have had lots of fun with tissue paper crafts since I started this blog.  Last year I shared my tutorial for how to make tissue paper pom poms, which could also be made miniature into tiny tissue paper flowers that I attached to napkin rings.  Just imagine how pretty these would looked tucked into a napkin ring:

I based these tissue paper flowers on the ones from this tutorial, and they turned out beautifully!  I used to have flowers that looked just like this in the garden of our old house (there’s a photo near the end of this post).   Check out how amazing they look in this Martha Stewart flower arrangement too.

How to make paper flowers

Materials:

• tissue paper


• a small plastic ball or golf ball


• wire


• green tape


• scissors


• the insides of some old fake flowers

Tissue paper flowers

Cut the tissue paper into smaller pieces.  I went with the natural folds of the tissue paper, giving pieces that were about 5″ x 8″.  You’ll need 5 sheets (more if you accidentally tear some while you are figuring out how to make these).

Place the ball in the middle of one sheet of tissue paper:

Wrap the ball with the tissue paper, like a candy, leaving enough space for the ball to pop out when you are done:

Twist the tissue paper as tight as you can against the ball so it will keep its form when you pop the ball out:

Repeat this five times:

Bend the end of the tissue paper into an L shape.  This will help you gather the petals so they don’t get crushed when you put them all together:

Gather all five of the petals using your fingers to pinch the ends together:

Wrap the ends with wire to keep them all in place.  You can probably skip this step if you are brave, but the tissue paper slips really easily and it would be next to impossible to wrap the tape around it without having it secured:

Use green tape to cover the ends.  I made two, one with green painters tape and one with green electrical tape.  Both worked really well:

So now you should have this crazy pinwheel looking flower.  Don’t worry, we aren’t done yet:

Snip off the ends of the petals leaving about 1/4″ of twisted tissue paper.  I waited until the end to do this because I was afraid the ball shape would come out while I was putting everything together:

Add the insides of some old fake flowers to the middle and they end up looking like this:

Below you can see the difference in colour with the green electrical tape.  Personally, I preferred the colour of the painters tape, but either one works.  If you are really resourceful, floral tape would probably be the best:

Here’s a photo of some balloon flowers we had in our old garden.  They had little pods that filled up like balloons and burst open into these pretty flowers.  It amazes me how similar they actually look to the tissue paper flowers!

These are so pretty!  They take about 5 minutes to make and are even faster once you get the hang of it.  You can attach them to napkin rings, make a small bouquet, or decorate your table with them.  They would look great with any of spring time decor.
