Sprite and Gummy Bear Popsicles

This post is what I would call a Pinterest experiment, and a good reminder to not expect everything you see on Pinterest to work out perfectly. I have been wanting to make these Sprite and gummy bear popsicles for ages! Ever since I found this picture on Pinterest (I couldn’t find the original source… I think it’s just a Tumblr picture?).

Don’t they look wonderful? And so simple! This picture has been floating around with a caption implying they are made with Sprite and gummy bears – I can say without a doubt, they are not. You can certainly follow the caption’s directions and freeze gummy bears and Sprite in a mold – just don’t expect them to look anything like the photo below!

Sprite and Gummy Bear Popsicles

Pinterest led me a little astray on this, but it’s worth posting about it, just so you can see how they really turn out. And it’s not that they look horrible, it’s just that they don’t look anything like what I was hoping they’d look like!

It’s possible the original photo is gummy bears and plain water? Or another liquid that freezes clear? Whatever it is, it’s definitely not Sprite! Without the original source, there’s no real way of knowing. Either way, YES, you can freeze gummy bears with Sprite and YES you get a delicious candy like popsicle. Here’s how they really look:

I still had some Sprite leftover from when we did the dancing raisins experiment last week so this was my opportunity to try these candy popsicles, since we definitely don’t buy Sprite very often. As for the popsicle molds, I just used the ones from IKEA.

Add about 10 gummy bears to each mold. You can add as many as you want, but keep in mind these popsicles are super sweet, so I personally thought that any more than that would be sugar overkill.

Fill the molds with the Sprite up to the “fill” line shown on the mold. Then insert the stick into the mold.

Freeze them overnight, or until they are set.

Run them under warm water to release the popsicles from the popsicle molds if necessary.

For the record, Sprite does NOT freeze clear, it freezes cloudy. But on the other hand, frozen Sprite is DELICIOUS. I would love a whole popsicle of only frozen Sprite!

I’ve never been a big gummy bear fan, so I think that these would taste better with a different type of candy. Gummy worms maybe? Or Swedish Berries?

You definitely can’t see the entire gummy bear figure through the mold, even where they are pressed right up the side, you can barely recognize that it’s a gummy bear. Not that it really matters. They are still colourful and they definitely make an impressive looking popsicle and a refreshing treat.

The gummy bears get kind of hard when you freeze them. To me, a frozen gummy bear had the same consistency as a stale gummy bear.

I found them really sweet, but my kids LOVED them! Candy? Soda? Yeah, I’m really not surprised this was a “win” in their eyes!

The popsicles definitely don’t turn out “clear”, but the frozen Sprite is delicious. Experiment with your favourite type of soda and switch up the candy, depending on your tastes!
