Paper Roll Animals Inspired by Wonder Park

Have you seen the previews for Wonder Park yet? It looks like such a fun movie! It’s coming to theaters on March 15th and would be such a great movie to take the whole family to see!

We put together a tutorial for how to make paper roll animals, inspired by the characters in Wonder Park. These characters are cute, colourful and they look so funny in the movie! The trailer just makes me smile:

 

Wonder Park tells a story of a wildly creative girl named June who imagines a magnificent amusement park that comes alive!

I love how the movie promotes creativity, hard work and using your imagination. The movie shows just how much fun you can have when you use your imagination.

And even better, it shows that if you set your mind to it, you can build whatever it is that you imagined. In a world where kids seem to be spending less time on creative play, I really love that message!

So of course, being the crafter that I am, I set out to create all those fun and lovable characters – using paper rolls! They’re really easy to make using simple craft materials!

How to Make Paper Roll Animals Inspired by Wonder Park

Here’s a list of what you’ll need. The following affiliate links will take you to products on Amazon that are similar to the materials I used to make these paper roll animals:

You can also use painted toilet paper rolls if you prefer! I just don’t like waiting for paint to dry. Or cleaning up paint for that matter. So I find it easiest to make my own paper rolls. The best part about crafting is that you get to decide!

How to Make a Paper Roll Monkey

If you’re using a toilet paper roll, cut it to be 4″ tall. Then paint it brown.

If you’re making your own paper roll, cut out a rectangle of card stock, 6″ x 4″.

Cut out a circle from brown paper. Then cut out two ears, two legs and a rounded heart shape from cream coloured paper, as shown in the image below.

I find that using a low temperature glue gun to make your paper rolls works the best. I’ve tried tape and even crafter’s tape, but the tape lets go in a couple of days. The glue from a glue gun keeps it very secure!

Roll the rectangle around something round, like a glue stick for example, just to give it a slight curve. Then squeeze out a generous line of hot glue along one of the edges of the paper rectangle.

Carefully line up the edges (there should be about 1/2″ overlap), then press the edge of the paper along the glue to make your paper roll.

Use crafter’s tape (or white glue, or the glue gun) to attach the ears to the back of the brown circle. Then attach the rounded heart shape to the front of the brown circle. Finally, attach two googly eyes and draw a simple face using a black gel pen. Attach the head and feet to the front of your paper roll.

For the arms, use two 6″ long brown pipe cleaners. Bend each pipe cleaner into a zig zag shape (like in the bottom left image below), then shape them into a little hand with 3 fingers. Add a bend in each arm where the elbow would be.

Poke a small hole in the paper roll where the arms will go (you can use a toothpick or even a mechanical pencil to make the hole), then push the arms into position.

And you’re done making Peanut the ride maker!

How to Make a Paper Roll Bear

If you’re using a toilet paper roll, leave it full size, about 4.5″ tall. Then paint it blue.

If you’re making your own paper roll, cut out a rectangle of card stock, 6″ x 4.5″.

Cut out a circle and two small ears from blue card stock. Then cut out a small oval from cream coloured card stock, as shown in the image below.

If you’re using card stock, glue together your paper roll.

Use crafter’s tape (or white glue or a glue gun) to attach the ears to the back of the blue circle. Then attach the cream coloured oval to the front of the blue circle. Add two small googly eyes, a small brown pom pom for the nose, and finally draw a little smile using a black gel pen.

Attach the bear’s head to the front of the paper roll. Then attach 4 medium sized blue pom poms as arms and legs. Finally, add a small blue pom pom to the back of the paper roll as the tail.

And you’re done making Boomer the ride tester!

How to Make a Paper Roll Beaver

If you’re using a toilet paper roll, cut it into two 2″ tall rolls. Then paint one brown and the other red.

If you’re making your own paper roll, cut out two rectangles of card stock, 6″ x 2″ (one brown and one red).

Cut out an oval shape, two small ears and feet from card stock. You’ll also want to cut out a small white rectangle for the beaver’s teeth, as shown in the image below.

If you’re using card stock, glue together your paper roll.

Use crafter’s tape (or white glue or a glue gun) to attach the ears to the back of the head shape. Add two small googly eyes, a small brown pom pom for the nose, and draw a little smile using a black gel pen. Attach a small rectangle of white paper as the beaver’s teeth.

Attach the beaver’s head to the front of the paper roll. Then attach 2 medium sized pom poms as arms. Finally, attach the feet to the bottom.

Make one brown one and one red one. And you’re done making Gus and Cooper the builders!

How to Make a Paper Roll Porcupine

If you’re using a toilet paper roll, cut it to be 3″ tall. Then paint it white. (Even better if you have white toilet paper rolls!)

If you’re making your own paper roll, cut out a rectangle of card stock, 6″ x 3″.

Cut out a rounded rectangle shape from gray card stock for the porcupine’s quills. It should be about 5″ wide and 4.5″ tall.  Cut out small white feet from white card stock, as shown in the image below.

If you’re using card stock, glue together your paper roll.

Use crafter’s tape (or white glue or a glue gun) to attach the pom pom nose, pom pom arms and feet to the paper roll. Draw two little eyes (shallow “U” shapes) and a little smile on the paper roll using a black gel pen.

For the porcupine’s quills, cut slits all the way around the edges of the gray card stock. Center the quills in position on the back of the paper roll. You want the quills to slightly wrap around the paper roll, so add a line of glue from a glue gun along one edge, then carefully press it against the paper roll. Next, add a line of glue from a glue gun along the other edge of the quills, then carefully press it against the other side of the paper roll.

And you’re done making Steve the safety officer!

How to Make a Paper Roll Warthog

If you’re using a toilet paper roll, leave it full size, about 4.5″ tall. Then paint it dark red.

If you’re making your own paper roll, cut out a rectangle of card stock, 6″ x 4.5″.

Cut out a small oval shape for the snout and a small rectangle, as shown in the image below.

Draw two little black ovals onto the oval piece of card stock using a black gel pen. We want the snout to sit away from the paper roll, so zig zag fold the little rectangle as shown in the image below. Glue the little zig zag to the back of the snout.

Fold down the top of your paper roll as shown in the top left picture in the image below. I added a little glob of hot glue underneath the middle so it would stay closed.

Attach two medium sized googly eyes and the other end of the zig zag from the snout piece to the front of the paper roll. Use a black gel pen to draw a wide smile on the front. I used a silver paint pen to draw the warthog’s teeth at either end of the smile. (You can cut out little triangles of white paper and glue them on if you don’t have a silver paint pen).

Cut 4 legs into the bottom of the paper roll by cutting out 4 rounded rectangles from the bottom, as shown in the bottom left picture in the image below.

Finally, wrap a dark red pipe cleaner around your baby finger three times. Then attach it to the back of the paper roll as the warthog’s tail.

And you’re done making Greta the boss!

Here’s the whole gang put together. These characters are so adorable and really simple to make!

These paper roll animals inspired by Wonder Park are SO CUTE, and they’re really easy to make using simple craft supplies! If you use toilet paper rolls, it’s a great way to upcycle! Or you can make your own paper rolls using card stock. Either way, this is a super fun kids craft that they can actually play with!
