Paint Chip Christmas Cards

My kids are getting to the age where they don’t want to tag along with us on every little errand we run anymore. Or at least, my oldest daughter doesn’t (she’s 6). We’ll be all like, “OK everyone! Go to the bathroom and put your shoes on! We’re going to Home Depot!” (That whole statement pretty much sums up our life… haha)

And my 6 year old will look at me, raise her eyebrow, and in a negative tone be like, “Ummm, can I just stay home?” Ha! Do you remember that show on MTV from the early 1990’s called Daria? That’s what it reminds me of. I was going somewhere with this. Oh right! Paint chips!

My kids are still little enough that I can usually entice them by replying, “Oh, come on. I’ll let you pick out a paint chip if you come!” (Not that staying home alone is even an option, but I don’t like to play that card unless I have to…) And then reluctantly, she’ll say, “Oh, alright.” In a completely unexcited tone. lol They’re such little bundles of joy when they’re bursting with excitement like that! Ha! (That’s sarcasm in case you can’t tell…)

These paint chip Christmas cards are SO BEAUTIFUL and they're really easy to make! They're so simple, but end up looking amazing! Such a great homemade Christmas card idea!

So……. It’s December 8 and I still haven’t sent out Christmas cards yet. Have you done yours? I want to do them, I really do. But every year (other than last year) I’ve done a fun and creative family photograph as our card. And gosh almighty, I feel like I’ve put so much pressure on myself to make our family photos AWESOME that I don’t even want to attempt them this year. Somehow, the older I’m getting, the more stressful Christmas is turning out to be. And I hate that! Because I LOVE Christmas!

And I love receiving Christmas cards! So I really need to get myself back on the Christmas card bandwagon. I love that these paint chip Christmas cards are really easy to make!  So if you’re looking for an easy homemade Christmas card idea, this one is perfect! And come on, who doesn’t love sparkly rhinestones!?!?

How to Make Paint Chip Christmas Cards

Here’s what you’ll need:

I used Behr paint chips, but Benjamin Moore paint chips would work really well as well.

Cut out different sizes of triangles from the paint chip. Try to avoid the words wherever you can, but remember, you can always overlap the triangles to hide the writing if it bothers you.

You can stick to all green paint chips, or you can do multi-coloured trees. I looooooove colour, so I made mine all sorts of colours!

You can buy pre-made blank cards from the stationary store, but I just used some of my leftover card stock from when I made the rolled paper hyacinth flowers last spring. I loved how the stars really popped on this dark blue paper.

The paper was just regular 8.5″ x 11″ printer sized card stock (65 lbs). I cut the sheet in half once, scored it at the center and folded my cards.

I used double sided tape to attach the trees to the card.

And then I added a foam glitter star sticker on top of the center tree.

They looked beautiful! But I still felt like they were missing something.

And we all know that everything is better with rhinestones! So I added some silver sticker rhinestones as stars… or snow… I’m not sure if they look more like stars or snow? What do you think?

If you use dark card stock like I did just cut out a piece of white paper and tape it to the inside of the card to write on. Or you could get a silver paint pen and write right on the dark paper. That would be beautiful!

I love that you can be creative with your colour scheme! Afterall, paint chips come in every single colour imaginable! And if you’re anything like me, you have a gazillion paint chips in a bag somewhere leftover from painting your house.

They look really cute if you cut the trees at an angle as well so that the white strips are diagonal. Kind of like a Christmas garland going around the tree.

You can choose any colours you like and personalize them for whoever you’re sending them to.  A single tree on the card looks gorgeous, or you can add a whole coloured forest like I did. Lots of options and really quick to put together!
