Lolly Pop Ghosts

Do you send treats for everyone in your child’s class on Halloween? I never know what I’m supposed to do?

Last Halloween, my daughter came home from Junior Kindergarten with a back pack filled with special treats that the other thoughtful moms had sent. What did I send with her? Nothing. Nope. Not a single thing! (And I didn’t send her in a costume either… but that’s a parenting fail to talk about another time.)

Holy make me feel super guilty!

This year, I’m definitely going to be more prepared! I’ve found the most perfect craft/treat to send to school with her. These lolly pop ghosts are SO EASY. I don’t have very much time to be making 22 of something, but these are quick, simple, and totally doable!

I originally planned to make these out of white fabric, but the idea of throwing out so much fabric was just painful. I bought some flour sack kitchen towels because they were the cheapest white cloth I could find (I didn’t like the idea of using cheesecloth), but I was dreading the idea of cutting them up.

I did a few more Pinterest searches just before I started making these, and found that some people were using Kleenex’s instead of fabric. BRILLIANT! I get to keep my flour sack kitchen towels and it feels so much less wasteful!

Here’s what you’ll need:

These tiny elastics have been a staple in our house. My girls were born with a lot of hair, so when they were babies, I’d use these little guys to make tiny pony tails on the tops of their heads. (Ah, it’s making me teary just thinking about their adorable little firecracker pony tails!)

These are the smallest elastics you can get at the dollar store (I think?). It was the perfect size to hold everything in place for this craft.

This next part is the trick to making these ghosts turn out well.  Use one full size tissue, and another tissue that has been cut into quarters.

Take the quarter piece of tissue and put it in the center of the full sized tissue. This will help to hide the colour of the lolly pop underneath the tissue. I tried it first with just one layer of Kleenex, but you could definitely see the lolly pop through it. Two layers worked much better to hide the colour.

Put the lolly pop in the middle.

Bunch up the tissue over the lolly pop and stretch the elastic over it to hold it all in place. The elastics that I used were small enough that I only had to go around once.

How easy is that!? It already looks like a ghost!

I used a brush tip Sharpie to make the eyes. Since it’s tissue, the ink definitely bleeds, so I recommend pressing (briefly) straight on with the tip of the marker for each of the eyes. If they end up being different sizes, go back and adjust them as you need to.

I found some tiny thin black and orange ribbon at Walmart for 50 cents each, so I used it to wrap around their necks. My husband said they looked like pretty ghosts. I was okay with the idea of them being pretty ghosts. haha

I wasn’t sure how long the ribbon should be so I started with 18″ pieces and tied them into a bow around their necks, like I was tying a shoe lace. It’s hard to get the bows straight, but I thought they looked pretty darn adorable!

I made about 10 of these in less than 10 minutes. That’s my type of treat!

I trimmed some of the bows a little shorter when I was done. You can decide what length you like best. I’m pretty sure they are mega cute, either way!
