How to Make Pom Pom Sheep

Aren’t these pom pom sheep adorable!? They’re so easy to make, and they’re such a fun little craft for springtime! You don’t need any special tools to make the DIY pom poms. Just a ball of yarn and your own hands!

OK, I might be enjoying the pom pom crafts too much. The pom pom penguins I made earlier this year were just so cute. And then I made pom pom dragons a few weeks ago. And because those little dragons were based on the dragon from How to Train Your Dragon, my 9 year old LOVED them.

I had no idea how fun and easy pom pom crafts were!? These pom pom sheep are adorable. They just make me smile. And out of all the pom pom crafts I’ve done, these were the easiest to make!

My 9 year old has been waiting very patiently for me to finish this post so she can play with these little guys! She has the pom pom dragons, and two pom pom penguins on her night table right now. I’m pretty sure these little sheep are going to join her collection shortly!

How to Make Pom Pom Sheep Tutorial

Here’s a list of what you’ll need. The affiliate links below will take you to products on Amazon that are similar to the supplies we used to make these pom pom sheep:

White chunky yarn (this is the exact yarn I used)

4 black pom poms (approximately 1 inch)

Black sparkly craft foam

2 Googly eyes

Silver paint pen

Glue gun

Scissors

I recommend using chunky yarn if you can – I linked to the exact yarn I used in the list above. You can definitely use regular thickness yarn, but the thinner the yarn, the more you have to wind it around your fingers to get a full looking pom pom.

Start by cutting an 8 inch long piece of yarn.

Slide the yarn piece between your middle fingers. Make sure you have it there when you wind the rest of the yarn.

If you’re using chunky yarn wind the yarn around your fingers about 70 times. (If you’re using regular thickness yarn, you’ll want to wind it about 130 times.)

Remember that 8 inch long piece of yarn between your middle fingers? Take the back end and pull it around to the top, sliding it between your middle fingers so it wraps around the middle of the windings of yarn. Then carefully tie it once. Don’t knot it yet – just tie it tightly enough that it can hold everything together. You can see what I mean in the video above.

Carefully slide the yarn off your fingers. Then pull the ends of that 8 inch long piece of yarn as tightly as you can. If it helps, you can press your finger on the knot to make sure it’s held tight while you tie. Tie another knot (you should have a double knot now) to hold it all together.

Using a sharp pair of scissors, (this would be a great time to pull our your fabric scissors if you have any!) carefully cut the loops of yarn, working your way around the entire circle, until all the loops have been cut.

You’ll end up with a very messy looking pom pom. Don’t worry. It’s supposed to look like this!

Again, using your sharp scissors, trim and shape the pom pom into a nice ball shape.

Work your way around the ball, trimming any uneven lengths of yarn. Every once in awhile, you can roll the yarn between your hands to see if anything new sticks out. It’s basically like you’re giving the ball a “haircut”.

Draw a little sheep head shape onto the black sparkly craft foam. Since my craft foam was self-adhesive, it had a paper backing that I could draw on.

Just to give you an idea of the size, my sheep head was about 2 inches from top to bottom, and about 2.5 inches from far left to far right.

After you cut out the sheep head shape, attach the googly eyes to the sparkly side of the craft foam using a glue gun.

Then use a silver paint pen to draw a simple little mouth onto the sheep, as shown in the photo below.

Next, you’ll need to make the feet for your sheep using black pom poms (mine were about 1 inch size pom poms).

Glue the front feet together with a small bead of glue from the glue gun. Then glue the back feet together, again, using a small bead of glue from the glue gun.

Test out the position of the feet on your working surface. Make sure you have them the proper distance apart. You’ll want to test it out with your pom pom to see what looks good.

Then squeeze a generous line of hot glue from the glue gun over top of the front pom poms and the back pom poms, as shown in the photo below.

Carefully press the white pom pom on top of the feet. Make sure you adjust the position of the feet quickly if you need to because the glue dries fast!

Finally, add some glue to the back of the sparkly craft foam.

Then press the shape onto the white pom pom in the position of the head.

And your pom pom sheep is complete!

I made 2 pom pom sheep because one just didn’t feel right. These are so simple to make and they look so cute!

This is such a fun craft for spring. Why do we associate sheep with spring!? I have no idea. But they are cute for any time of the year, really!

Each pom pom sheep takes about 15 minutes to make. It really depends how much effort you put into the “haircut” that shapes the pom pom into a circle. If you only cut out the main straggler ends of the yarn pom pom rather than shaping it perfectly, it will go a lot faster.
