It’s so good I’m going to say it again: Homemade Nutella Recipe! (with an exclamation mark!) For anyone who thinks Nutella isn’t overly nutritious, this recipe is not going to make you think any differently. But, if nothing else it is DELICIOUS. I had no idea you could make such a thing at home!
I also had no idea you could use a food processor to turn nuts into butter. The thought had never even crossed my mind, but you know what? It’s really pretty easy!
I probably don’t need as many pictures as I’ve added to this post, but looking through them again my mouth is watering. (Mmmmmmm…. Nutella!) So I thought you might enjoy seeing them too.
Homemade Nutella Recipe
This recipe is based on a recipe at The Eccentric Cook:
- 200g of hazelnuts (skins removed would be easier)
- 300mL can of condensed milk
- 250g of dark chocolate (The chocolate chips were really sweet, so I would recommend even darker chocolate)
- 1/4 cup of hot milk
First roast the hazelnuts either in the oven for 10-15 minutes at 350F or in a dry pan over low-medium heat for 10-15 minutes.
Pour them onto a plate (or something) to cool:
Since my hazelnuts had skins I tried to remove as many as I could just with my fingers (they come off pretty easily). Then I read somewhere that you can put them on a tea towel and roll them around and that gets the skins off too.
Put them in a food processor:
When you first turn the processor on they’ll be chopped like this:
But after about 5 to 10 minutes they’ll start to turn to butter and get more of a liquid consistency:
I couldn’t get the consistency completely smooth, but it was still pretty decent (I was also lazy and didn’t bother to use a spatula to scrape the edges):
Melt the chocolate over low heat:
Add the condensed milk:
Stir with the heat still on low:
Add the hazelnut butter:
Add the warm/hot milk:
Stir it up and it will look like this:
It made about 3 medium jars full. It was REALLY hard not to eat all of it!
I couldn’t get mine quite as smooth as real Nutella, but it definitely has the same flavour:
It was really sweet, so I think next time I’ll try using chocolate with less sugar.
This was definitely a treat! I’ve been eating spoonfuls all afternoon!
