Blowing Bubble Towers | Easy Bubble Activity

Did your mom ever get mad at you for blowing bubbles in your milk when you were a kid? I remember my mom used to give me a small glass full of milk and a straw to drink it out of. Then she’d sit me down at the kitchen table with an orange, yellow and gold striped place mat (ah, the 80’s) and then within a few seconds I’d be busy blowing bubbles in my milk. Tell me you know what I’m talking about, because if you don’t, you need to go down to the kitchen right now and pour yourself a glass of milk and blow bubbles in it. I’ll wait here.

Why my mom gave me milk and a straw so often I have no idea. (And a glass too… I remember breaking quite a few of those… I guess parents are lucky these days that we have so many non-breakable plastic options!). She would get sooooo annoyed with me for blowing bubbles. I’d blow into the straw, and the milk bubbles would slowly rise up the glass and start popping all over my place mat. I knew I wasn’t supposed to do it, but it was fun!

These bubble towers are ridiculously easy to make and they are SO MUCH FUN. They totally remind me of blowing bubbles in my milk as a kid. Dish soap and water my friends. That’s all this is! I can’t believe I didn’t try it sooner, because my kids loved it! We’ve made bubble solution, giant bubbles, and bubble snakes, but these bubble towers are definitely the easiest!

I was inspired by the post over at Happy Hooligans. This is an activity where you’re actually allowed to blow bubbles and make all the mess you want. What kid doesn’t love blowing bubbles!? Don’t worry. Just give them a large cookie sheet, and it will contain the mess.

Blowing Bubble Towers

The full printable recipe is at the end of this post, but here’s what you’ll need:

  • Small plastic cup

  • Water

  • Dish Soap

  • Straw

  • Cookie Sheet

  • Food Colouring (optional)

The food colouring is completely optional. It didn’t really affect the colour of the bubbles, but it was fun to see some colour coming from inside the bubble towers. So you can decide.

Fill your cup about half full with water. If the cup is too full, it will overflow when you start blowing bubbles.

Then add a few drops of liquid dish soap. Do you see the drops in the bottom of this cup? Seriously, that’s all I added. Barely any at all.

Then we added one drop of food colouring, just for fun.

The more bubbles they blew, the larger the towers got.

When you stop blowing, it’s pretty cool that the bubbles will stay there for a bit before they start popping on their own. It gave the kids a really good chance to admire their work.

The bubbles just kept on coming until the whole pan was full.

The kids loved poking the bubbles with the straw to pop them, and then they’d start over.

Make sure you remind your kids to blow through the straw and to NOT suck in. My poor six year old got to learn what soap tastes like today. Oops.
