Edible Chocolate Play Dough With Only 2 Ingredients!

This edible chocolate play dough is so much fun! It only has 2 ingredients so it’s ridiculously simple to make! It feels just like regular play dough and it tastes sooooo good!

I tried making edible chocolate slime from jello pudding last summer and it was a huge flop. I’m talking crazy sticky hands and a big bowl of slimy, chocolatey mess that was horrible to clean up. (But do you know what wasn’t a flop? Using Jello chocolate pudding to make fudgsicles! *highly recommend*).

I looked up all sorts of chocolate slime and chocolate play dough recipes, but they had so many ingredients! And after my chocolate jello slime failure I just didn’t think it was possible.

But then I discovered edible frosting play dough using vanilla frosting earlier this spring, and guess what? I think it might be my favourite homemade play dough recipe EVER. I’m hooked!! Using frosting to make play dough is super simple and the texture is sooooooo perfect!! And it’s so much fun to play with!

You can use all your favourite play dough tools. It looks and feels just like regular play dough. Except you can eat it! And it tastes delicious. I’m not sure if my kids had more fun playing with it or eating it?!

I’ve only used whipped frosting – both chocolate and vanilla (the vanilla was slightly easier to work with) to make play dough. So I can’t say if other types of frosting will work. I found the frosting at the dollar store, so this play dough was also super inexpensive to make!

By the way, if you’re wondering what “icing sugar” is, it’s just the Canadian term we use for powdered sugar.

If you make edible chocolate play dough, remember that you can also use vanilla frosting – again with only 2 ingredients! You can grab the recipe for it here:

Two Ingredient Edible Chocolate Play Dough

Seriously – You only need two things! Here are affiliate links to what I used:

I know that 1 to 1-1/2 cups of icing sugar is vague, but it seems to depend on a lot of things – weather, humidity, and how much you pack into your measuring cup. So I recommend starting by adding a little less than 1 cup of icing sugar and taking it from there.

I used 1 cup of icing sugar that was slightly heaping and slightly packed, but you might need a different amount. So add a bit of icing sugar to the frosting, stir, and then assess. If it’s too sticky, add a little more icing sugar.

For some reason I can’t be more exact with this particular recipe. You really need to assess the dough as you’re making it and add icing sugar as you go.

The dough should look dry and crumbly as you’re mixing it.

Stir the chocolate frosting and the icing sugar together, using the back of the spoon to press the ingredients together as you go.

When you can no longer stir it with the spoon (again, it’s going to be dry and crumbly), use your hands to knead the dough.

The warmth of your hands should warm the frosting and you should be able to work it into a consistent dough ball.

If it’s so crumbly that you can’t make it stick together in dough ball, try adding another tablespoon of frosting and working it in. You can also add a few drops of water if needed.

And if you find that it’s too sticky, sprinkle a small amount of icing sugar into the dough.

It took a little tweaking to get the quantities right, but my dough worked out perfectly!

I mean, it’s brown. And sometimes brown isn’t the funnest colour. But it’s also chocolate. And if you weren’t a chocolate fan, I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t be reading this post! Yum!
